Core Action Value 12:

Leadership becomes a value when it is more than just what you do for a living but rather what becomes a personal philosophy, a perspective on looking at challenges and opportunities, and a commitment to serving others through your example and the expectations that you set.

Core Action Value 11:

Service begins with a sincere desire to help others, which is then followed up by action. It's an ancient paradox that the person who gives a helping hand often benefits as much or more than the person being helped. The 3-Ws of service are work, wisdom, and wealth. Whether it is in giving wealth, wisdom, or work, there is always a way that each of us can be of service to others.

Core Action Value 10:

Enthusiasm is the spark that creates personal happiness and professional success. Its presence or absence in organizations determines the difference between a negative, high-stress work environment and one that is positive, productive, and resilient. Enthusiasm is more contagious than measles in a daycare center, and its spreading presence can bring to fruition even the grandest of dreams and most naive of expectations.

Focus is essential to productivity, and productivity is fundamental to organizational effectiveness and a successful career and fulfilling life. People's biggest problems are caused by a failure to focus on time (procrastination and wrong priorities) and money (debt and frivolous spending).

Every great accomplishment was once the "impossible dream" of a dreamer who refused to be deterred. Until the dream has become real in the mind of the dreamer, it is unlikely to ever be manifested in the outer world. Once it has become a concrete mental image, a memory of the future, though, it's only a matter of time and effort before it makes the transition from an impossible dream to a great accomplishment.

The sweet spot of purpose is where these four qualities intersect:
1. You have a passion for what you do and enjoy the work.
2. You are good at what you do and are committed to consistently getting better at it.
3. You are contributing to the people you serve and the people you work with and making the world, or at least your corner of the world, somehow better.
4. You are rewarded for your work in ways that matter to you, including financially.

In terms of the context of personal values, the four pillars of faith are:
1. Having faith in yourself
2. Having faith in others
3. Having faith in the future
4. Having faith in a higher power

The times when faith is most important are often the times when it is hardest to find, but faith is a force that starts where certainty ends.

Perseverance follows naturally upon courage - it takes courage to start something, it takes perseverance not to quit when the inevitable obstacles and setbacks arise. Fear is a reaction; courage is a decision. Perseverance is making that decision day after day - it is courage that endures.

A coach once turned to a pool full of a middle school swim team and told them to try is to risk failure; not to try is to guarantee it. While we don't know if those words are her own, they still ring true.

People who don't ask questions for fear of looking dumb never learn. People who don't try for fear of failure never grow. People who never ask for fear of rejection never gain. People who fear the uncertainty of change stagnates. So try, fail, grow, gain, and continue changing, because this is the only way to become better than you were yesterday.

To be our best selves, we must take the time to look inward and see who we are now and how we are perceived and see how that compares to whom we want to be in our eyes and the eyes of others. Awareness requires us to open our eyes, ask hard questions, and lead with kindness.
