Dear friends and neighbors,

As the State Board of Elections will make official today, I came just short of being elected to represent District 19 in the House of Delegates. I offer warm congratulations to Christa Tichy, who ran an inspiring and hard-fought campaign, and who exhibits grace and integrity at every turn. And congratulations to our District 19 incumbents on their reelection, as well.

I have been reflecting since the primary, and through the holiday weekend, on the transcendent nature of self-governance and the privilege of being a candidate for public office.

While a candidate’s name is on the ballot and (frequently) in your mailbox, every campaign is a collective effort.

I want to thank the many volunteers who knocked doors, sent postcards, spoke to their neighbors, planted signs, raised money, hosted events, and did everything they could to help me win this race.

I want to thank the neighbors who opened their doors to a complete stranger, and listened as I asked for their votes. Who shared their stories with me, offered me water on hot days, invited me in to have a seat.

And thank you to my beautiful wife Keerat and daughter Aneesa for their encouragement and love, and for inspiring me to be the best version of myself. They deserve nothing less.

Every conversation, every little effort, every individual contribution to this campaign is another thread in the beautiful tapestry of our democracy. We govern ourselves. We choose our leaders. We serve each other. And out of our many hopes, our strivings, our debates, our talents, our sorrows and joys, we create one community.

So while I am disappointed by my loss, I am not at all discouraged. I am excited to remain in the fight with all of you, and to continue to serve Montgomery County, the place that taught me the meaning of “home.” Thank you, District 19, for this incredible opportunity.

The polls just closed, and my heart is full.

Over 2,638 voters met at their front door.

Over 215 contributions totaling more than $80,000.

Countless canvassing shifts, poll coverage, early mornings and late nights spent listening to voters, convincing neighbors, and lifting up our vision for District 19.

I joined this race because I love my community, and I love this country. Every moment of this campaign has confirmed the power of community to overcome division, love to overcome fear, commitment to overcome apathy.

Thank you all, from the bottom of my full heart. No matter the outcome of tonight’s election, I’m feeling hopeful about the future of Montgomery County.

We had a great time at the leisureworldmaryland Juneteenth celebration this evening, and we ran into our friends Meaghan Copeland and Kristin Mink for MoCo! The Leisure World Association for African American Culture (LWAAAC) did a phenomenal job putting this event together.

We’re proud to have the endorsement of Hans Riemer! I met Hans during his first run for county council in 2006, when he was the energetic former head of Rock the Vote and an inspiration to young people with an interest in local politics. I admire the work he’s done, both during his time on the Council and after, to put our county on a more sustainable path. I hope to build on his legacy in Annapolis!

I had a great time meeting with the congregation of Tikvat Israel Congregation this morning and sharing Kiddush after service. The congregation is doing wonderful work in the D-19 community, with a focus on welcoming and supporting our immigrant neighbors. Many thanks to Rabbi Marc Israel for the invitation, and to the congregation members who warmly welcomed me (and made sure I ate!)

Instead of the usual sermon, there was a presentation by the New Neighbors Interfaith Alliance on how they are marshaling c3 resources and community support for Afghan refugees who came to Montgomery County after the Taliban retook control. It was a timely reminder of the important work that faith communities do in D-19, as well as an affirmation of the values shared across many traditions — welcoming the stranger, the obligation to care for our neighbors, and the joy inherent in service. I am excited to return to Tikvat Israel soon!

I’ve been fortunate to have some great mentors in my life. hired me for my first job when I was a sophomore at Georgetown, working as his aide on transit issues. It was an amazing experience where I learned a ton about transit and land use issues, and also got to watch George navigate political decisions and manage his council office. What I love about George is that he’s a tough and dogged advocate, and a genuine and loyal boss. Even though I was just a kid, George included me in staff meetings and checked in with me to make sure I was getting something out of the experience. I’m so grateful for his continued support, and to have his endorsement!
