Remembering and recollecting our vision and the mission of Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya, USA
Very few Sri Lankans envisioned founding a Sri Lankan cultural organization for the benefit of the expatriate Sri Lankan community living in the D.C. metro area as far back as 1982.
The legacy of Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya begins with the dreams and longing of one art-loving individual who lived in Falls Church, Virginia. It was none other than Mr. Rohana Senaratne who anticipated forming a cultural organization exclusively to promote Sri Lankan culture among expatriate Sri Lankans and Americans living in the Greater Washington, D.C., metro area.
However, it is not clear exactly when this pioneering group was created. Some believe it was 1982, and others think it was 1984. We know it was established as a legal entity in 1990. This aesthetically enthusiastic, energetic cultural group, formed by Mr. Rohana Senaratne, later evolved into a nonprofit organization now known as Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya (SLRKK), USA. The new executive committee and the 2026 board of directors are striving to revive the cultural service Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya provides for future generations. I wanted to remind you of our vision and mission at this important time for our organization.
Thanks,
Geethanjana Kudaligamage
Secretary, Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya, USA

HELLO….!!! ‘YES, CULTURE IS OUR “THING”
“Let’s inaugurate a new era of Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya with a new spirit.”
Dear brothers, sisters, our supporters and patrons,
It is not at all hyperbolic to say that Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya, USA fully recognizes the meaning of native culture for our expatriate Sri Lankan community. Yes, it is not a secret. This understanding led us to invest all our wealth in cultural capital, because we understand that what holds a community together is not mere symbols like a NIC (National Identity Card), passport, or birth certificate, but a shared cultural experience. We all recognize it as “our thing.” Culture brings a sense of belonging into our lives and becomes the basis for the true attachment within the community. Yes, embracing and fostering that attachment is our primary goal.
We all know myriad fantasies generally shape the relationship to the culture of any given community. The way the said community practices its creative activities through arts, organizes its feasts, rituals, traditions of mating and their ceremonies…. in short, all the details by which they make visible the unique manner they shape up their lives, characterizes the identity of a community. Our unique way of living is what we call “our culture.” Very few living cultures in the world can proudly claim to have adorned and treasured their longstanding culture with such vast, time-tested continuity as Sri Lankan culture for almost three thousand years.
However, because culture is a living ‘thing,’ it cannot escape evolution amid its incessant interactions with other cultures. The upcoming SLRKK’s December 31st night gala event is a fine example of this evolutionary cultural phenomenon, characterizing our culture's transformation and testifying to our indisputable interaction with Western culture. That is why we, the SLRKK new executive board and the board of management, are inaugurating a new era of ‘rocking in the new world’ while not forgetting our own cultural heritage and identity.
Dear friends, culture is our business. We, Sri Lanka Ranga Kala Kavaya, have been here for so long that we can proudly claim a pioneering role in merging Sri Lankan culture of the Orient into the USA in the Occident for a quarter century. Our vision and mission are clear. We will strive to ensure that the cultural symbols, metaphors, and dreams you treasured throughout your life are honored and realized.
On behalf of SLRKK, I thank you all for supporting us since SLRKK's beginning in 1990, and I hope you will continue to support us for many more years to come.
Thanks
Geethanjana Kudaligamage

HELLO….!!! ‘YES, CULTURE IS OUR ‘THING.’
“Let’s inaugurate a new era of SLRKK with a new spirit”
