In the mid-nineteenth century in the U.S., the main ingredients used in brick-making were clay and sand or shale. The clay was dug from the shore of water bodies, such as the Hudson River. Beach sand mixed in very well and improved the quality of the brick.

By definition, masonry is the construction of structures from individual units, which are laid in a pattern and bound together by mortar. In addition to bricks, masonry construction can use stone, granite, marble, limestone, concrete, stucco, tile, or even glass.

If you are remodeling and want to use brick, brick veneer is a good option. Brick veneer is a single layer of brick attached to another surface. It can be applied either indoors or out, and is available in any look ranging from a traditional red brick appearance to a more countrified, rustic look.

One of the ways you can protect and preserve your new masonry is to clean it regularly. It’s recommended that you pressure wash the surface whenever you see dirt building up or discoloration. Stains should be removed immediately, so that they do not permanently mar your driveway or stone wall.

The different patterns used to lay bricks are called bonds. The most common bonds are Flemish (or Dutch), Monk, English, American, and garden wall bonds.

Severe weather (SW) bricks are used for exterior construction in climates subject to wetness and below-freezing temperatures. Moderate weather (MW) bricks are for exterior use in dry climates with freezing temperatures.

Unlike pressed bricks, wire-cut bricks have two or three hole in them to accept mortar and improve strength and stability.
