Last October, the Montgomery County Council passed legislation banning the box. Ban the box laws prohibit employers from discriminating against potential new hires based on criminal history. The County Executive signed the legislation in November and the new law took effect January 1, 2015.

It is now illegal in Montgomery County for employers to ask about criminal backgrounds before a first interview with job candidates. If you or people you know have applied for a job in Montgomery County since January 1 and you were asked about prior convictions on the application you completed, please contact us immediately.

Hope Restored, Inc., wants everyone to contact us who feels like they have been discriminated against because of past brushes with the law.

Know your rights and exercise them. The Montgomery County Office of Human Rights has prepared a Ban the Box FAQ: http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/humanrights/Ban_the_Box.html.

Please let us know if you have any questions about Ban the Box.

We are pleased to welcome nationally-renowned nonprofit leader and author Marshall McNott as our new Board of Directors Chairman.

February 6, 2015
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Silver Spring, Maryland

Marshall McNott Elected Hope Restored, Inc. Board President

Nationally recognized non-profit leader and author Marshall McNott emerged from retirement to lead the Hope Restored board of directors.

McNott previously served as president and CEO of the Los Angeles Mission and he was the Watts Health Charities first chief executive. Under McNott, the L.A. Mission had a $17 million annual budget and 120 employees. The Watts Health Charities provided healthcare for underserved minority populations in Los Angeles. There, McNott raised money to renovate a large dental clinic for the poor and he was voted “employee of the year.” McNott shared lessons from his 40 years of nonprofit executive experience in his 2007 book, Nonprofit Nonsense & Common Sense.

After retiring McNott moved to Montgomery County to be near his grandchildren. Retirement didn’t suit him and he began volunteering as a chaplain in Montgomery County correctional facilities. He met Hope Restored president Jeffrey Thames at a 2014 Neighbors in Need meeting. After hearing Thames describe his work, a bell went off in McNott’s head: “It was serendipitous because what he’s doing is exactly what I wanted to do,” he recalls. “I don’t play golf and I’ve always wanted to have a sense of giving back.”

McNott brings major fundraising and organizational chops to Hope Restored. Reducing recidivism in Montgomery County and fundraising for Hope Restored are his primary goals. He wants to hear Hope Restored’s clients say, “If it had not been for Hope Restored I’d probably be back in jail or homeless on the streets again.” McNott quotes Jewish tradition to explain his philosophy: “He who saves one soul, it’s as if he saved the world.”

McNott chairs a board that includes Vice Chair Chandra Thames, M.S., and members Gregory Twilley, Valerie Johnson, James A. Jones, Christopher St. Vil, Ph.D., and Andre Barnhart. Jeffrey Thames Sr. is Hope Restored’s President and CEO. Other officers include Secretary Ann Coletti and Treasurer Anthony Brice.

Contact Jeffrey Thames at (202) 810-HOPE (4673) for additional information or visit Hope Restored on the web at www.hoperestoredinc.org.
