Title: Stepping into Authority

Text: Luke 10:17-20 NKJV
[17] Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” [18] And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. [19] Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. [20] Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
Beloved, the Devil will never back down because of your strength. He will only back down when he realizes that the Sovereign LORD is with you. In our text for today, Jesus sends 70 disciples into the world. A world that is not waiting to embrace them but waiting to reject and destroy them. However, the 70 return with joy, the kind of joy that came from the success of mission. There's joy in mission, joy in seeing hearts delivered from demons and all manner of sickness. There's joy in seeing lost souls renewed and receiving Christ.
Jesus then tells the 70 in verse 18 that, "I saw Satan fall like lightening from heaven." Indeed Satan is a defeated foe. Victory is assured to the children of God. Victory is assured even to you today.
In verse 19 Christ assures the disciples that, "In the cosmic battle I have given you authority and power." The Greek word 'Exousia" is used in this verse to mean legal authority while "Dunamis" is used to mean brutal and physical power. When you're driving a car, the engine gives the vehicle power to move at great speed. The vehicle can even trample over any object in its path. But when a traffic officer stands in front of you and raises his hand, the hand is a symbol of authority. His hand is backed by the authority of the entire government and legal system. That authority causes you and the power of the vehicle to stop immediately the officer raises his hand.
Child of God, you may not have physical power but when you raise your hands toward heaven, you obtain great spiritual power and legal authority to trample over and stop all demonic forces in the universe. Christ Jesus has given us all power and authority from heaven. Nothing can destroy us. Therefore, as you face the scorpions of sickness, financial loss, death and the serpents of deception, trials, disappointment or depression, remember nothing can defeat you. So step into the authority that Christ has granted you. Do not think about your limitations, think about the power of Christ.
In vs 20 Jesus goes on to tell them that "Rejoice because your names are written in heaven". Many today would focus only on experiencing the God of miracles. This is not a problem. But the major question is, "Is your name written in the books of heaven?" Miracles can happen but the most important thing is that your name should be saved. And the greatest miracle we can ever experience is to see our own hearts transformed and changed. The heart is deceitful and desperately wicked but it can be transformed and purified by the power of Jesus.
Do you have a relationship with this God who is ordering our steps? Have you opened your heart to Him? Have you been transformed by Him? May your name be written in heaven and receive authority and power from Him. May you stand strong knowing that God has granted you victory. Amen.
