Happy 236th Birthday to the United States Coast Guard!

The United States Coast Guard celebrates its 235th birthday today. The Coast Guard was created on August 4, 1790, when the first Congress authorized Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton to construct ten vessels, known as “revenue cutters,” to combat smuggling and enforce tariff laws. Hamilton carried out his charge with enthusiasm, which is why he is considered to be “the father of the Coast Guard.” For the next eight years, the Coast Guard was the United States’ only armed maritime force. Congress didn’t establish the Navy until 1798. (The Navy prefers to say “re-establish” as it dates its founding to an October 1775 act passed by the Continental Congress.)

**Throughout August, we honor those whose sacrifice is etched into our nation’s history.**

National Purple Heart Month is a time to recognize the extraordinary courage of the men and women who were wounded or gave their lives while defending the United States. The Purple Heart, established by General George Washington in 1782 and revived as a military decoration in 1932, remains one of our nation’s most revered honors, symbolizing sacrifice in the face of danger.

The American Legion, Department of Florida proudly honors every Purple Heart recipient and extends our deepest gratitude to their families, whose strength and support have also served our nation. Their sacrifices remind us that the freedoms we enjoy have come at a profound cost.

This month, take time to attend a local observance, thank a Purple Heart recipient, learn their story, or support wounded veterans in your community. Together, we ensure their service and sacrifice are never forgotten.
