I Gotta Be Me
When I first graduated from Photography School and I was trying to figure out how to do the job I called around to other photographers for informational interviews. Mostly I got a brick wall, I assume because they saw me as competition and didn’t want to share their secrets. One guy however said, “Look, I don’t know what to tell you, but you have to change your business name from Fat Yeti Photography to Daniel Morris Photography.” I said, “Thanks, but no thanks. I gotta be me.”
Over the years I cannot say how many people have said that they love the name, or that they couldn’t remember the name exactly, but they knew it was “Yeti something,” so they were able to google it. I have had former clients stop me in the grocery store with “Hey Mr. Yeti.” I think it has won me business just because of the whimsy.
Has it lost me business? Maybe some. I always thought of it as self-selecting. If people were put off by my name, they wouldn’t like my product. They were looking for something more corporate or traditional. Recently a close friend suggested that even having the word Fat in the name would turn people off. Possibly. I don’t think it is crazy, but I am all in on my name and brand and can’t turn back now.
