Today at the Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates in Chicago, Ill., Dr. Chris Bundy, WPHP Executive Medical Director, co-presented “Physician Wellness – Resilience in Action.”

Hosted by the AMA Academic Physicians Section, this presentation explored the key drivers of physician distress, explained the barriers and supports that impact successful physician re-entry and long-term career stability, and discussed evidence-informed wellness and reintegration strategies to strengthen return to practice pathways and improve physician retention within healthcare systems and organized medicine.

Dr. Bundy presented alongside George Abraham, MD, MPH, MACP, FIDSA, FRCP, Immediate Past Chair of the Federation of State Medical Boards, Emeritus President of the American College of Physicians (ACP), and Chief of Medicine at Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass., and Tracey Ziegler, MBA, BSN, RN, LifeGuard Program Director at the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. The panel was moderated by Heather Farley, MD, MHCDS, Group Vice President of Professional Satisfaction and Practice Sustainability at AMA.

📢 Free On-Demand CME Available: WPHP Overview & Impairment

The Washington Physicians Health Program (WPHP) recently produced a one-hour educational video presentation titled “WPHP Overview & Impairment.” In this session, Chris Bundy, MD, MPH, Executive Medical Director of WPHP, provides an overview of WPHP and the services it offers to support the healthcare community across Washington State. Dr. Bundy also explores impairment—how it is defined, how it presents, and how to address it effectively.

This educational activity is approved by the ACCME for 1 hour of AMA Category 1 continuing education credit and is available free of charge on WPHP’s website. In addition, other health professionals may be eligible for CME credit through our continuing education partner, CineMed.

Dr. Laura Moss, Associate Medical Director of the Washington Physicians Health Program (WPHP), presented "Hiding in Plain Sight: Substance Use Disorders In Healthcare Professionals" to the Harborview, MultiCare, and Swedish Addiction Medicine Fellowships today.

In this presentation, Dr. Moss summarized the unique risk factors and contributors to addiction in healthcare professionals, identified signs of impairment in healthcare professionals and barriers to effectively addressing concerns, and described the process by which WPHP assists healthcare professionals, balancing public trust with the rehabilitative needs of the professional.

Dr. Chris Bundy, Executive Medical Director of the Washington Physicians Health Program, presented "Setting the Record Straight on Physician Health Programs (PHPs) in the United States" today at the American Psychiatric Association Annual Meeting in San Francisco, Calif. Co-presenters included Tyler DeFriece, MD; Karen Miotto, MD; and Michael Myers, MD.

This session provided an overview of the history of PHPs and the PHP model as it exists today, analyzed evidence that characterizes the effectiveness of PHP services, discussed challenges faced by PHPs and their participants, and formulated strategies to support this critical resource.
