Heart Rate Zones: Why Exercise Intensity Matters 08/25/2026

Which zone are you in?

Heart Rate Zones: Why Exercise Intensity Matters Heart rate zones reflect exercise intensity as a percentage of a person's estimated maximum heart rate, which is commonly calculated by subtracting age from 220. For example, a 50-year-old adult’s estimated maximum heart rate is

Health Alert: Poor Metabolic Health Linked to Heart Rhythm Disorder.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of
conditions—including central obesity, high blood pressure, abnormal cholesterol levels, and elevated blood sugar—that
increase the risk of poor health outcomes. According to a recent review, individuals with metabolic syndrome face a 1.5-
to 2-fold greater risk of developing atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm that can increase the risk of stroke, heart
failure, and other cardiovascular complications. The authors suggest that chronic inflammation, changes in the heart's
structure, and dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system associated with metabolic syndrome may help explain this
association.

Chris McGreal Johnson & Johnson to pay $572m for fueling Oklahoma opioid crisis, judge rules. The Guardian Monday,
August 26, 2019

“The pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson ran a “false and dangerous” sales campaign that caused addiction and death
as it drove America’s opioid epidemic, an Oklahoma court has ruled.”

“Johnson & Johnson sought to influence medical practice with “substantial payments of money to a variety of different
pain advocacy groups and organizations that influenced prescribing physicians and other health care professionals”. They
used academic findings “in deceptive ways” to downplay addiction risks.”

“In conclusion, there is insufficient evidence to make a determination of paracetamol’s [Tylenol’s] effectiveness in low back
pain treatment. This is concerning since paracetamol is recommended as part of the baseline care in most clinical
guidelines for low back pain. It is unclear how much of an effect, if any, paracetamol provides in improving pain and
disability in low back pain.”

*Tylenol [paracetamol/acetaminophen] was finally declared ineffective in the 2017 American College of Physicians Clinical
Practice Guidelines.

Mental health:

Type 2 Diabetes Linked to Higher Risk of Dementia.

A review of epidemiological studies
found that diabetes mellitus corresponded to a 56% higher risk of dementia. The association appears stronger for
vascular dementia, likely due to damage to blood vessels that supply the brain. Chronic high blood sugar may also
contribute to inflammation and structural brain changes over time. These findings highlight the potential cognitive
risks associated with long-term metabolic dysfunction.

Early Manual Therapy May Speed Whiplash Recovery.

Among a group of 120 patients with acute
whiplash-related neck pain, researchers found that patients who received manual therapy—to improve joint
movement and reduce muscle tension around injured tissues—in addition to usual care experienced faster pain
improvement than those in a usual care-only group. Doctors of chiropractic are well trained in several manual
therapy techniques used to help facilitate recovery in patients with whiplash-associated disorders.

Circadian rhythms is a big deal.

Changing Sleep Schedules May Influence Metabolic Health.

Among more than 8,800 adults, researchers found that those with greater night-to-night variability in sleep duration were up to 78% more likely to develop type 2 diabetes within the following decade.

Researchers believe inconsistent sleep patterns may
disrupt circadian rhythms, hormonal regulation, and insulin sensitivity. The findings support the importance of
healthy sleep routines for metabolic health.

Sleep Brain Age Predicts Dementia Risk.

An analysis of long-term data involving nearly 7,000
adults found that individuals whose brain wave patterns during sleep appeared older than their chronological age
were more likely to develop dementia over a 17-year period. Specifically, for every 10-year increase in brain age
beyond chronological age, the risk of dementia increased by about 40%.
