If you’ve ever stopped by our Sonoma CAN VITA tax prep site, chances are you’ve seen Mike Kawasaki’s warm smile! 😊 We are beyond thrilled to share that Mike was just honored with Santa Rosa Merit Award—and we couldn't be prouder! https://www.srcity.org/1241/City-Merit-Awards

After 35 years in the tech and business world, Mike stepped back to find a little more balance, do some traveling, and give back right here at home. In 2017, he signed up as a volunteer tax preparer. Nine years later, he’s still here every single tax season, donating over 60 hours a year to help local families get the refunds they count on.

Mike is the kind of neighbor who always goes above and beyond:
• Adapting through tough times: When COVID hit, he jumped right into our remote drop-off process from home, taking on extra returns so no family was left behind.
• Connecting from the heart: He even learned Spanish so he could speak directly with families, making what can be a stressful time feel easy, dignified, and welcoming.
• Sharing his know-how: He uses his business experience to share practical financial tips, helping folks set themselves up for success in the coming year.
• Always showing up: Whether he's encouraging a brand-new volunteer or staying late to make sure the last person in line gets taken care of, Mike is always the first to help and the last to leave.

Mike, thank you for 9 incredible years of heart, hard work, and community spirit. You make our city a better place every single day! 💙

Dear Community and Head Start parents and caregivers, here is something worth knowing.

The federal Office of Head Start has proposed major changes to the Head Start program Performance Standards through a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). If these changes are approved, it would strip away essential standards around classroom ratios, teacher credentials, health and disability services, require English only support, and reduce administrative funding.

These rules threaten the quality of care we provide to the over 300 children and families we serve her in Sonoma County, as well as the working conditions and support for our staff.

If you are a Head Start parent or caregiver, please sign the Parent Sign-On Letter and stand with families across the country.

Head Start parents and caregivers, here is something worth knowing.
A good classroom takes a whole team behind it. People run the background checks, keep the building safe, and support the teachers so they can focus on your child.
The new proposed federal rule would cut the money that pays for that team so deeply that programs might not be able to keep them. And a budget cap cannot tell the difference between wasted paperwork and a background check that keeps your child safe.
If you are a Head Start parent or caregiver, please sign the Parent Sign-On Letter and stand with families across the country.

Now Seeking: Land Use Architect & Financial Development Advisor for Tierra de Rosas
Health Equity Rising and the Tierra de Rosas Civic Coalition are excited to launch two Requests for Proposals (RFPs) in support of the Tierra de Rosas Civic Parcel, a community-led development in the heart of Roseland that will bring health and wellness services, cultural and gathering spaces, youth programming, and workforce development to a historically underserved Latine community.

We're seeking a Land Use Architect (LUA) to lead conceptual design and site planning grounded in community input and culturally responsive, healing-centered design principles, and a Financial Development Advisor (FDA) to help build a diversified capital strategy, including New Markets Tax Credits, philanthropic partnerships, and state and federal grant opportunities.

Both roles are central to bringing this community's vision to life, a space built not just for Roseland, but with and by Roseland.

Proposals are due October 1, 2026.
