Entertainment captures attention. Engagement develops the brain.

Of course, there is a place for entertainment. Entertainment is enjoyable, restorative, social, and even educational at times.

But the distinction matters because entertainment and engagement are not the same thing.

This is especially important when it comes to screens. Many apps, videos, and games are designed to capture attention. They may keep a child focused on a screen, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are building focus.

This helps explain why some children can attend to a screen for two hours, yet struggle to attend to a book for two minutes.

Fast-paced, highly stimulating, constantly novel experiences provide frequent rewards and can shape what the brain expects from an activity. Over time, slower-paced activities may feel less interesting, less rewarding, and more difficult to sustain. In other words, the brain begins to expect a higher level of stimulation, making activities that require effort, patience, and persistence harder to engage with.

What develops the brain is play, movement, exploration, curiosity, conversation, creativity, imagination, problem-solving, experimentation, risk-taking, responsibility, persistence, boredom, struggle, and meaningful human connection. These experiences require children to actively participate in the world around them rather than simply consume it.

So when it comes to screens, think screen time smart. Choose intentional over constant. Choose a shared screen over an individual device whenever possible. Choose movies and shows with sequence, storyline, and depth over short-form, fast-paced videos designed to rapidly capture attention.

And perhaps most importantly, let children be bored.

Boredom is not a problem to solve. It is often the starting point for curiosity, creativity, problem-solving, play, and true engagement. If we constantly entertain children, we may unintentionally rob them of the very experiences that help their brains grow.

Por supuesto, el entretenimiento tiene su lugar. Es agradable, reparador, social e incluso educativo en ocasiones.

Pero la distinción es importante porque entretenimiento e interacción no son lo mismo.

Esto es especialmente relevante en el caso de las pantallas. Muchas aplicaciones, videos y juegos están diseñados para captar la atención. Pueden mantener a un niño concentrado en una pantalla, pero eso no significa necesariamente que estén desarrollando su capacidad de concentración.

Esto ayuda a explicar por qué algunos niños pueden prestar atención a una pantalla durante dos horas, pero les cuesta concentrarse en un libro durante dos minutos.

Las experiencias rápidas, altamente estimulantes y constantemente novedosas proporcionan recompensas frecuentes y pueden moldear lo que el cerebro espera de una actividad. Con el tiempo, las actividades más lentas pueden resultar menos interesantes, menos gratificantes y más difíciles de mantener. Estas experiencias requieren que los niños participen activamente en el mundo que los rodea, en lugar de simplemente consumirlo.

Por lo tanto, en lo que respecta a las pantallas, piense en el tiempo frente a ellas de forma inteligente. Elija el uso intencional en lugar del uso constante. Elija una pantalla compartida en lugar de un dispositivo individual siempre que sea posible. Elija películas y series con secuencia, argumento y profundidad en lugar de videos cortos y rápidos diseñados para captar la atención rápidamente.

Y quizás lo más importante: deje que los niños se aburran.

El aburrimiento no es un problema que haya que resolver. A menudo es el punto de partida de la curiosidad, la creatividad, la resolución de problemas, el juego y la verdadera participación. Si entretenemos constantemente a los niños, podemos privarlos involuntariamente de las experiencias que ayudan a que su cerebro se desarrolle.

Un año maravilloso ha terminado. Este año, hemos visto a nuestros niños crecer de forma extraordinaria. The CDC's "Learn the Signs, Act Early" program continues to update and refine their Milestone app! Initially released during the pandemic, the free app continues to provide a valuable tool to both parents and providers for tracking developmental milestones.
Over the last few years, we've seen parents use it in some rather creative ways. Our personal favorite was a mother who looked at what developmental milestones were coming up as a way to better babyproof her home!
