Wohler Bridge Update: New Bearings, New Deck and a Revised Timeline
First, an important schedule update: Wohler Bridge will remain closed beyond the previously anticipated Oct. 30 reopening date.
The project team is planning for a winter 2026 reopening as crews complete the remaining work. Because several upcoming activities are weather-sensitive, we want to allow flexibility as we move further into fall.
Our Road Closures website will show Dec. 31, 2026, as the closure end date. That is a conservative planning date, not a new anticipated reopening date. The bridge may reopen sooner, and we’ll update the date as the schedule becomes clearer.
So, what’s happening on the bridge?
A major focus has been replacing the bearings that sit between the steel bridge and its concrete piers. To replace them, crews carefully lift and support sections of the bridge, remove the old roller bearings and install new seismic bearings. Eight of the 12 bearings have been replaced, with crews working on the final four.
Up top, the new deck is also taking shape. Metal pan decking is in place, along with steel studs that will connect the new concrete deck to the bridge structure. Crews are now preparing for reinforcing steel and, weather permitting, the concrete deck pour later this month.

**UPDATE: Freestone Flat Road closure rescheduled**
The full closure of the Freestone Flat Road Bridge has been moved to **Friday, Oct. 9, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.** The bridge may be closed for up to two hours while crews safely remove the old bridge.
Drivers should continue to expect delays and possible lane closures during work hours through Friday. Emergency access will be maintained.
Please allow extra travel time and follow directions from flaggers. Thank you for your patience.

Road Work Update: Keeping Drainage Clear
Road Maintenance crews had a quiet weekend with no after-hours calls. This week, crews are continuing fall maintenance across Sonoma County, with a strong focus on keeping drainage systems clear and ready for rain.
Work includes:
- Cleaning culverts on Annapolis, Roblar, Fife Court, Armstrong Court and Neely roads
- Replacing a culvert on Moscow Road
- Ditch cleaning on Mill Station and Calistoga roads
- Opening a culvert and completing rock wall work on Annapolis Road
- Removing roadside debris
- Cutting brush with CAL FIRE and mowing roadside vegetation
- Pothole repairs at various locations
- Striping and sign maintenance throughout the county
Why so much drainage work? Ditches and culverts move stormwater away from our roads. Removing sediment, vegetation and debris before the rains arrive helps keep water flowing and reduces the potential for localized flooding, erosion and roadway damage.
Please slow down, follow signs and flagger directions, and give crews plenty of room to work safely.

🚧 TRAFFIC ALERT: Westwind Blvd. & Copperhill Pkwy. Intersection Closure
The intersection of Westwind Boulevard and Copperhill Parkway will be temporarily closed tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 1, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for paving and striping work.

Message boards are in place, and flaggers will be stationed along both roads to help direct travelers. Access to area businesses and offices will remain available via alternate entrances and nearby parking lots.
The closure will allow crews to work efficiently toward completing the remaining paving and striping.
Please plan ahead, follow traffic controls and allow extra time when traveling through the area.

REMINDER: Upper Old Cazadero Road Update: Final 6-Hour Closure Ahead
📅 Thursday, Oct. 1
⏰ Full closure: 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
This is expected to be the project’s final six-hour closure to complete road grading and place new pavement. All other work during this two-week period is expected to take place with delays of up to 30 minutes rather than a full closure, Oct. 2-9.

Road Builder’s Notebook: The Road Under the Road
Occidental Road is finished, but we’re rewinding to August to show you the work you can’t see anymore.
The project used Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR), a process that rebuilds the roadway from below rather than simply placing new pavement over the old surface.
Crews reworked the existing pavement and underlying material, incorporated Portland cement to help create a stronger, more stable base, then graded and compacted the roadway before new pavement was placed.
In other words, much of the old road became part of the foundation for the new one.
Take a look at the process that’s now hidden beneath the finished Occidental Road and how rebuilding what’s underneath can help extend the life of the roadway and make the most of the public’s investment.

♻️ Second Service is back!
From time to time, we’re sharing stories about what happens when County property is no longer needed—and how finding a second service for those assets can help stretch public dollars, reduce waste and avoid unnecessary costs.
This time: 26 hoop houses, each 40 feet long, on County property near the Airport.
When the structures were no longer needed, demolition and disposal could have come at a significant cost. Instead, Sonoma Public Infrastructure made the hoop houses available through public auction.
The winning bidder:
✔️ Purchased all 26 hoop houses for $600
✔️ Deconstructed and removed the structures
✔️ Cleared the surrounding debris
The result? An estimated $100,000 in avoided demolition and disposal costs.
That's the bigger story behind surplus property. Sometimes the greatest value isn't what an item sells for, but what taxpayers no longer have to pay.
That's Second Service: finding another use, another owner or another responsible path for County assets that have finished their original job.

Road Work Update: Clearing the Way for Fall
Drainage work continues across Sonoma County this week, with crews cleaning roadside ditches and replacing culverts to help keep water moving and protect roadways as we head into the rainy season.
Why do we clean roadside ditches?
Ditches are an important part of the road’s drainage system. Crews remove vegetation, sediment and other material that can block the flow of water. Keeping these channels clear helps move stormwater away from the roadway, reducing erosion, standing water and potential damage during storms.
This week’s work includes:
- Ditch cleaning on Brooks, Bodega Highway, Los Alamos and other roads
- Culvert replacement on San Antonio and Moscow roads
- Drainage maintenance in the Hacienda area
- Continued repairs to the Verano Avenue bridge abutment
- Roadside vegetation work with CAL FIRE and Sonoma County Fire
- Pavement striping, traffic-calming stencils and sign repairs

We’re getting closer to the finish line on the Upper Old Cazadero Road project.
From Sept. 28 through Oct. 9, travelers should expect delays of up to 30 minutes while crews continue work along the roadway.
One final extended closure is needed to complete road grading and place new pavement:
