Why does Sonoma County’s own drain rock make beautiful decorative stone?

Beautiful: The tan, red, and black tones in our aggregates come from the volcanic history that took thousands of years to form.

Functional Firewise landscaping: Swapping bark mulch for decorative stone in the first five feet around your home is one of the easiest defensible-space upgrades you can make.

Local: produced locally, they typically cost less than imported alternatives

Stop by our Yard & Garden location on Sebastopol Road in Santa Rosa to see and feel the difference for yourself.

What's in a Name? The Story Behind Soiland Materials

People hear "Soiland" and assume we made it up: soil and land, a tidy name for a company that moves rock and dirt for a living. It's a good guess, but it's wrong.

Soiland is a Norwegian family surname, which refers to the provenance of the family’s “farmland".

Our Owner, Mark Soiland, was born to grandparents who were the first generation of the family born in America, arriving in San Francisco around 1900 to parents who were still fully Norwegian.

Here's the wild part: for over 100 years, a family named after farmland has done nothing but work the land. A cabinetmaker who landed in San Francisco around 1900. A chicken ranch during the North Bay egg boom. Then pipelines, quarries, real estate, construction — generation after generation, same thread.

Marv Soiland started the company in 1962 and bought Stony Point Rock Quarry in '73. Four generations later, it's still run by a real Soiland.

Fruit trees love organic Soiland Materials compost... especially these 3 customer favorites:

1. Mango Mulch: No mangos in there! A carefully crafted soil conditioner and fertilizer in one, this is what we’re famous for.

2. The Real McCoy: For those who like a high nitrogen content from organic horse and chicken manure,
this is the compost for you.

3. Grab N' Grow: Made year-round from recycled green
materials and a custom blend of organic fertilizers including seabird guano, feather meal, gypsum and oyster shells.

Compost is available at Soiland Yard & Garden in Santa Rosa - it is seasonal, be sure to *call for availability*.

We're open on Sundays!

Throughout the year, we regularly donate materials to local non-profits. It is an important part of our culture to serve our community, because the organizations that care for our community deserve a little care back.

Earlier this year, we were glad to help improve the grounds at the Sonoma County Humane Society right across the street form our Yard & Garden location.

If you work for a local non-profit that could use materials for a project, feel free to submit a donation request online: https://soilandmaterials.com/donation-request/
