The United Nations Secretary-General stood in London today and delivered the most direct warning of his tenure — fossil fuels are simultaneously destroying the planet's climate and threatening every nation's energy security at the same time. Speaking at London Climate Action Week on June 23, 2026, as a deadly heatwave gripped Europe, UN Secretary-General António Guterres issued an urgent appeal for far more ambitious global action on climate change, directly linking the world's dependence on oil to both the accelerating climate crisis and a growing energy sovereignty emergency being felt across dozens of nations.
Guterres drew a direct line between fossil fuel dependence and two simultaneous crises: the worsening climate emergency driven by carbon emissions, and the energy security crisis linked to massive shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz caused by the ongoing war involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. He argued these twin crises share a single origin — the global economy's continued reliance on oil and gas that must be transported across contested sea lanes controlled by geopolitical rivals. His message was stark: the pathway out of both crises simultaneously runs directly through renewable energy. In the same speech, Guterres called on artificial intelligence companies to come clean about the full environmental cost of their data centers, specifically naming carbon footprint, water consumption, and land use as impacts the industry has consistently obscured from public view.
The speech landed on the same day European cities recorded record temperatures and scientists confirmed the first half of 2026 as the hottest six months in recorded human history. The Secretary-General's message was unambiguous — the window for preventing irreversible damage is closing, and renewable energy is the only path to both planetary survival and genuine national energy independence.

America is building more new power plants in 2026 than it has in any single year in its entire history — and nearly every single one of them is clean. According to the US Energy Information Administration, the United States is set to add 86 gigawatts of new electricity generating capacity in 2026, more than the country has ever built in a single calendar year. Solar alone will provide 51 percent of that record new capacity. Batteries will deliver 28 percent. Wind will add another 14 percent. Natural gas, the fossil fuel most actively supported by the Trump administration, accounts for just 7 percent of new capacity. Coal, the other fossil fuel the White House has pledged to revive, does not appear anywhere in the list of power plants currently under construction.
The numbers reveal a disconnect between political rhetoric and economic reality that the energy industry has stopped trying to reconcile publicly. While the Trump administration has gutted decarbonization legislation, imposed tariffs on solar components, and directed federal funds toward coal, private capital is voting loudly in the opposite direction. Clean energy — driven overwhelmingly by pure economics rather than policy support — is consuming nearly all of a vastly expanded construction pipeline, while gas gets a scant sliver and coal gets nothing.
The United States built 33 gigawatts less in 2025, itself the biggest yearly power plant buildout since 2002. The 2026 figure makes that record look modest. Whatever political turbulence follows in the years ahead, America will face it with tens of gigawatts of brand-new solar panels, batteries, and wind turbines already generating electricity across the grid.
