Many within our community have both conditions, Elhers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS). In fact there is a strong correlation between EDS, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome(POTS) and the development of CRPS. It is incredibly beneficial to our community to have researchers analyzing this data and validating these findings! We as a community of patients have known this for years but it’s fantastic to have it backed by reaearch!
🧬 Is there a stronger link between Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) than previously recognized?
A new study published in RAPM analyzed data from 54.2 million commercially insured patients to explore the relationship between EDS and CRPS.
🔍 Key findings:
📊 Patients with EDS had an ~11-fold higher proportion of recorded CRPS diagnoses compared with patients without EDS.
👩 Women represented the vast majority of patients with both EDS and CRPS.
🦵 CRPS Type 1 accounted for 76.8% of cases, with the lower extremity being the most commonly affected site.
📈 These findings highlight a strong population-level association between EDS and CRPS diagnostic coding in a national claims database.
💡 Recognizing this association may encourage earlier identification, multidisciplinary evaluation, and future research into the biological mechanisms linking EDS and CRPS.

CRPS is considered a form of dysautonomia by Dysautonomia International. There is also a link between CRPS and POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome). POTS is a more common form of dysautonomia.
