BOULEVARD NIGHTS: The Fortieth Anniversary of a Chicano Legacy FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: David Escobar Sonoma County Lowrider Council Community Liaison (415) 933-1492 [email protected] Nearly forty years ago, a new Warner Bros. film entitled Boulevard Nights was released nationwide in theatres across the country. The story centered on a fatherless Mexican American family living in an unincorporated region of Los Angeles more commonly known as East L.A. The Avila family, two brothers and their hard working mother, face their greatest challenge when the younger brother Chuco, seeking acceptance and a sense of identity, becomes seduced by the gangster lifestyle he is surrounded by. Boulevard Nights was the first major studio film to feature lowriding at the very center of its story. Lowriding is now respected and recognized internationally as a legitimate art form. But it wasn’t always so. In the decades since the films release, lowrider clubs have flourished and seen their numbers grow exponentially. The great majority of these clubs give back to their communities through fundraisers for a variety of worthy causes. Lowriding and community go hand in hand. Lowriding itself has morphed into a global phenomenon with lowrider clubs now found in Japan, Brazil, Australia and even Russia! It has shed many of the stigmas once erroneously associated with it. The recent exhibitions of lowriders and lowrider culture at The Peterson Museum in Beverly Hills and the GYPSY ROSE (the late Jesse Valadez’s iconic lowrider featured in Boulevard Nights) displayed in the National Mall in Washington D.C., are a testament to this transformation. In 2017 Boulevard Nights was inducted into The National Film Registry, an honor bestowed on films that bare “cultural, historical, or aesthetic significance”. That same year, the honorable California State Senator Richard Pan issued a proclamation officially recognizing Boulevard Nights for its invaluable contribution to the Chicano community. Today we stand on the precipice of political controversy as Chicano/Latinos deal with present-day xenophobia and racial contention. Yet Boulevard Nights has not only maintained its popularity, but continues to acquire new fans with each succeeding generation. As we approach the fortieth anniversary of this iconic cinematic time capsule, the time is right to honor both the film, and its legacy with a public screening followed by a Q&A with the principal stars of the film, in association with Sonoma State University and the Sonoma Lowrider Council. This screening will take place on Thursday March 28, 2019 3:00-10:00pm at Sonoma State University Student Center Grand Ball Room. Free tickets are available on line at?
