I believe the purpose of sport education and athletic competition in community colleges should be to provide learning opportunities for personal growth. Sport should test the student-athletes’ current abilities, skills, discipline, conditioning, and desire. It should challenge them to strive, to reach beyond their current state and, in so doing, instill the tools necessary to be successful in their chosen endeavors and to be a positive role models and productive members of society. At SRJC we strive for victory in the athletic arena, but we measure our true successes with personal development and academic progress. Coach Jake Fitzpatrick, was honored at the NCAA Wrestling Championships with the Bubb Award for excellence in coaching in 2006. Only six awards are given nationally each year between all of the Division I, II, and III schools, as well as the NAIA and junior colleges. The nominees for the Bubb Award must epitomize the qualities and characteristics of a role model and mentor for developing student-athletes. Fitzpatrick has been involved with Bear Cub wrestling since 1984, and has coached local high school wrestling at Piner and Santa Rosa as well.
