When the Sonoma County wrestling community lost 19-year-old Ryan George to an accidental fall at Yosemite National Park on Sept. 20, the impact was immediate and devastating.

“On Monday, when we found out the news, we just broke down,” teammate John Reg said. “Everyone’s struggling with talking about him. I know I was crying. I know a lot of us were just like, [we] couldn’t function.”

For a group of people who are usually upbeat and loud, team captain Connor Jeong said that the entire atmosphere was depressed.

George grew up in Santa Rosa. He lost his father when he was an infant, and, in July, he lost his mother. He had finished second in his wrestling weight class at the Dave Pacheco Invitational at Sacramento on Sept. 18 before heading to Yosemite, where he slipped while hiking with some friends near Illilouette Falls two days later.
