Indra Jatra (Yenya Punhi) 2025 in California is being celebrated on Sunday, September 7, 2025, hosted by Newah Organization of America Northern California- NOANC

Indra Jatra ,Originally called Yenya Punhi by the Newar community, the festival was renamed Indra Jatra after King Prithvi Narayan Shah of Gorkha conquered Kathmandu in 1768. In the Newar language, "Ye" means "Kathmandu," "Ya" means "celebration," and "Puhni" refers to the full moon, so Yenya translates to the "birthday of the old city of Kathmandu." The name change and the alteration of rituals aimed to transform the festival into a celebration for all of Nepal, rather than just the Newar community.
The Kumari is a young Newari girl believed to be the embodiment of the Hindu goddess Taleju. She is selected for her physical perfection and a horoscope that once complimented the king’s but now aligns with the prime minister’s. She is worshipped as a goddess until she reaches puberty.
