HVAC and plumbing owners, the September price letters landed.

Parts up 5% to 15% from one maker. Gas pipe up 6%. Tanks and pumps up 3% to 7%.

That's from the trade press this week, not from us.

The estimate you sent in July is priced on July parts.

So date every quote.

Write how long the price holds, and why.

"This number is good for 30 days because our costs moved on September 1."

That reads as honest, not pushy.

πŸ‘‰ Add the date line to your estimate template today.

A homeowner wrote this in a review last month.

"We got 5 estimates. One roofer went in the attic."

That roofer got the job.

5 companies quoted the roof.

One went up on it, went into the attic, and explained what he saw.

The inspection was the pitch.

πŸ‘‰ Go in the attic, photograph it, and put the photos on the estimate.

Do you agree with this?

Nobody wants a new roof.

Nobody wants a furnace, a repipe, or a panel upgrade either.

They want the water out of the house, the heat back on, and the lights to stop flickering.

Eugene Schwartz wrote the book on this in 1966. His point, in plain words: advertising can't create desire. It can only take the desire that's already there and point it at your door.

So here's the uncomfortable question for your homepage.

Does the first line name what they want... or what you sell?

"Residential and commercial roofing services" is what you sell.

"Dry by Friday" is what they want.

Write that first line for the homeowner, not for the roofer.

Roofers, here's a test that costs nothing.

Pull the last estimate you sent.

Now read it like the homeowner did, with 4 other bids on the kitchen table.

Look for a photo of what you found, one line a stranger could check, and the day you'll call back.

Most estimates are a number and a logo.

The winning bid is the one they understood.

πŸ‘‰ Fix yours before the next one goes out.

HVAC owners, here's a shoulder season exercise that costs nothing.

Pull last week's call log and count the calls that came in after 5 pm or before 8 am.

Then count how many got a callback before the next morning.

Nobody calls at 9 pm to get a quote. After-hours calls are emergencies, and emergency work is the best-margin work in a slow month.

Every one of those calls that hit your voicemail went to the next HVAC company on the homeowner's list, until somebody answered.

Answering first is the whole game.

Pick up those calls and the slow season gets a lot less slow.

What does your log say?

"Licensed and insured" is on every website in your county.

It's true...

It's also invisible.

The owner who puts their license number on the truck, the estimate, and the homepage says the same thing in a way the customer can check in ten seconds.

A claim they can check beats a claim they have to take on faith.

One more for the road: "Free estimates" says nothing. "Estimate in writing before we leave" says everything.

Go look at your own homepage and count the claims a stranger could check.

The more they can check, the more they trust you.

Unpopular opinion for anyone buying leads...

More leads = More problems

If your office returns a missed call the next morning, a bigger lead budget just buys you more missed calls.

If your estimates die in a folder, more estimates die in a folder.

The gap is between the lead arriving and someone picking up the phone.

Nobody sells you a fix for that...

They just sell you more leads.

Disagree? Tell us how you're capturing all your leads before they call your competitor πŸ‘‡

Wanna know what kills more home service jobs than bad reviews?

Voicemail.

Here's a test worth running this week.

Call your own office tonight after hours, and listen to what a homeowner hears.

Then fill out the form on your own website and time the reply.

Most owners have never done this from the customer's side. And the results are usually uncomfortable.

Because the homeowner with the leaking roof isn't leaving a message...

They're calling the next name on the list.

Harvard Business Review published a study on this back in 2011. Companies that contacted a new lead within an hour were about 7x more likely to qualify it than companies that waited.

You can't control what a lead costs.

You CAN control how fast the phone gets picked up.

πŸ‘‰ Run the test tonight. Fix what it finds before you buy more ads.
