The futon has a much longer history than the sofa-bed many Americans associate with the word today.
In Japan, futon (布団) refers to bedding. The shikibuton/shikifuton is the part you sleep on, traditionally placed on tatami flooring. A kakebuton is the covering used over the sleeper.
The bedding could be laid out at night, then folded and stored during the day. This allowed the same room to serve different purposes rather than being permanently occupied by a bed.
Traditional futons were made from layers of cotton and were relatively thin and flexible. Buckwheat-hull pillows, called sobakawa, are another traditional form of Japanese bedding.
The Western idea of a “futon” as a mattress that folds into a sofa came later.
The original futon wasn’t a sofa. It was bedding.

I Did 5 Huge Things To Minimize Air Pollution In My Home 🌿
One of the biggest changes I made was swapping out some of the highest-contact items in my home for natural alternatives.
✔️ Foam mattress → Natural futon mattress made with cotton, wool, latex, h**p, or coconut coir
✔️ Synthetic couch → Natural sofa bed built without polyurethane foam
✔️ Synthetic bedding → Cotton, wool, linen, or kapok bedding and pillows
✔️ Bulky bed frame setup → Tatami bed + shikibuton
✔️ Foam crib mattress → Coconut and wool crib mattress
