When I think of God, I think of a Muhammad Ali athlete, a pro boxer who invites any mortal man into the match with him. I imagine him watching as a willing soul steps into the ring, and the Cosmic superpower says, “I’ll go easy on you.”I imagine a poor mortal doing his best, swinging his hardest and jabbing his quickest, only for God to sit back and be impressed that this mortal thinks he can win.I imagine God mostly diverting punches, letting only a few land to make this human think he’s doing something worthwhile, only to be hit by a powerful fist that leaves the man gasping for breath.I imagine as God watches the man stumbling to get up, a sense of respect arising in God's consciousness that this mortal is not backing down.I imagine God realizing that this human will not go down without total and utter surrender.As powerful as God is, even a God can’t break the free will of a man.As this God knows there’s no point in fighting any longer since this human will never relent, God hits him so hard in the hip that it breaks.The human is forced to give in and leave the ring. He can’t walk, not without a limp anyway.I imagine God stooping down to help this broken man off the arena floor, only to circle around for the next mortal foe.When I imagine God, I imagine a God who, as he prepares to fight his next contender, looks back at his wounded previous opponent and smiles.I imagine God whispering to himself: that one’s special because he wouldn’t back down, even with me. 📸
