Apparently racing wasn't enough exercise for the day because Tricia decided we needed to walk everywhere afterward—and uphill.

After a full weekend of racing, we walked into town for some Tex-Mex and picked up some local peach cider to take back with us to celebrate our wins.

And after all that walking, I think we officially worked out the lactic acid left in our legs from the race.

The distance race is DONE—and I got FIRST! Tricia took 2nd

The original course was supposed to be 12K, but strong winds forced organizers to shorten it to about a 10K.

I fell in once and spent most of the race working in a draft train with four or five other women. When I finished, I knew I had done well, but I honestly had no idea where I had placed.

Even better, when we looked at the results across ALL the women—including the Open racers who qualified for the Canadian team—Tricia and I finished 6th and 7th overall.

That means we were right behind some of the top Canadian paddlers AND earned more international ranking points today.

What a way to finish the weekend in Alberta!

Race day weather was keeping us guessing. One minute it was raining and lightning, with a storm rolling in from one direction and sunshine in the other. Then, thankfully, it cleared up just in time to race.
With only about 15 minutes before we had to be on the water, there was no time for pre-race video. It was time to warm up, get focused, and go.

I’m also racing on a different board today. I’m usually on my Flying Fish, but Tricia was gracious enough to let me borrow her 14' x 21.5" NSP Carolina for the distance race.
I woke up feeling rested, the sun came out, and after days of bundling up in layers, I finally got to race in a bikini. It almost felt like Florida again.

Now it’s time to see what happens out there. Wish us luck!

Mission accomplished. I managed to source a pretty solid airport meal.

First, I found an almost completely whole-food yogurt. I ditched the packaged oats that came with it and added my own colostrum and nuts.

Then came the painful part: a $30 Caesar salad. Airport prices are no joke. But I added the ALDI tuna I packed in my backpack to boost the protein and turn it into a more complete meal.

And finally, a matcha from Starbucks because, well…there weren’t exactly a lot of choices.
Is it perfect? No. But healthy eating while traveling isn’t about perfection. It’s about looking at what’s available, making the best choice you can, and bringing a few things from home that can make those choices better.

We Made the World Rankings! | G20 Tech Race Results

We’re pretty excited about this one! Tricia finished 7th overall and I finished 4th overall in the women’s technical race at the G20 Festival in Alberta.

Today we raced OPEN—meaning all ages competed together, including Open, Masters and Grand Masters. The top three took home prize money, but our finishes earned us points toward the world rankings, and that means a lot to both of us.

The sprints didn’t go our way, but you can’t win them all. Tomorrow we get another shot with the 12K distance race!

I improved my VO₂ max from 26 to 32 after age 50.

Now I’m putting that fitness to the test as I head to Alberta, Canada, to compete in the G20—a two-day paddle race with sprint, technical, and 12K distance events.

VO₂ max is a measure of how effectively your body can take in and use oxygen during intense exercise. And while it can decline as we age, age doesn’t mean you have to stop improving.

In my latest article, I break down what VO₂ max is, what can cause it to drop, and how I’ve used sprint work, endurance training, recovery, and consistency to improve mine.
