Many programs may give advantages based on age, but it is important to note that PAPs do not. Age, veteran status, and location do not give any patient a specific advantage. This can make the process more difficult to some clients who may have been expecting it, which is why we are here to take you through the process so you know what to expect.

Patient Access Programs vary in how they accept clients. Insurance is an important factor- and while it may seem tempting to say PAPs would exist almost exclusively for patients without insurance- the truth is that it varies! Some only allow patients without insurance, but others only patients with insurance. APA takes on the endeavor of finding our clients' necessary support- depending on their personal situation.

Financial Barriers in patient assistance may be the most intuitive. Patient Assistant Programs can look at the patient's dollar income or percentage in comparison to the US poverty line. They may also use the patient's out of pocket cost to determine whether or not they can help. APA works with our clients to find out the necessary information and look for many options that will work with the patient's information, so our clients do not have to worry.

To start our "Barriers in Advocacy" we have some information about the health requirements necessary to obtain financial assistance for medications. Many Patient Assistant Programs (PAP) require written proof of medication, but this can even extend to further documentation from the doctor depending on the PAP or the medication. When clients work with us, we help them to obtain the necessary documents, ensure they are valid, and submit them.

Our next series focuses on the barriers in accessing prescription medication, which we will start off with a update from our executive director: “Lately our advocates have encountered so much ‘red tape’ with a particular program that we unfortunately were told that the pharmaceutical company would not work with us. We are now forced to let 6 patients know to call themselves or to change medication to a program that we have worked with. It has reminded me of what a tedious process this can be for anyone but especially for those who are unable to advocate for themselves. This is why the APA program has existed for so long and continues to be a critical program.”

Unfortunately, APA is no longer able to take walk in visits due to short staffing. This will also increase the turnaround for our new and current clients. These changes have also forced us to close on some days. We apologize in advance for our inconvenience and are working to find more employees to reopen again!

Our fundraiser with was a success! With the help from donators, volunteers, and Cool Hand Lukes we were able to surpass our goal of $1,358! The proceeds will allow 20 clients access to their necessary medications and other APA services. Again, thank you to all who helped but on this event!
