“Text Neck Syndrome is an ever increasing problem today. Most of us suffer from this uncomfortable condition to some degree. Todays fast paced life and demands on our time drive us to become more efficient in communication with those important to us. Did you know the average head weighs between 10 and 12 pounds? Our spine neck and muscles are designed to balance this important part of our anatomy at the very top of our body as the master controller of our every move.

The repetitive body position of looking down at our phone, tablet or computer device results in an upper body posture that extends the neck forward as in the above illustration. The further our head and neck is extended forward and focused downward, the more our head will effectively weigh placing an unnatural strain on our neck, shoulders and spinal column as a whole.” -Spine Wellness Center

Here are some things you can do to help with text neck:
- Raise the phone. Move the phone (and other devices) up closer to eye level so the head does not have to be tilted forward.

- Take frequent breaks. Spend some time away from the phone—or any type of head-forward posture. If needed, use an alarm to set automatic reminders to take breaks from handheld devices.

- Stand up straight. Good posture, with the chin tucked in and shoulders pulled back, keeps the body aligned in a neutral position.

- Exercise regularly. A strong, flexible back and neck are more able to handle extra stress.

Do not twist or turn the body; instead, move your feet to turn. Your hips, shoulders, toes, and knees should stay facing the same direction. Keep the load as close to your body as possible with your elbows close to your sides. This will help prevent injuries!

What are you building new this week?

Mindfulness is the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.

While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it’s more readily available to us when we practice on a daily basis.

Whenever you bring awareness to what you’re directly experiencing via your senses, or to your state of mind via your thoughts and emotions, you’re being mindful. And there’s growing research showing that when you train your brain to be mindful, you’re actually remodeling the physical structure of your brain.

Mindfulness is available to us in every moment. Find your moment and take it! You deserve it! ✨

Work-related disorders aren’t just limited to heavy manufacturing or construction. They can occur in all types of industries and work environments, including office spaces. Research shows that repetitive motion, poor posture, and staying in the same position can cause or worsen musculoskeletal disorders.

The good news is that moving or stretching is a buildable habit. For starters, you can set a timer to remind you to take a quick walk or stretch. If you’re pressed for time, there are even certain stretches you can do at your desk. Scroll down for the tutorial on working out those computer kinks.

Remember to breathe normally throughout the stretches, and never hold your breath. With each stretch, you may find yourself more flexible. Don’t go further than is comfortable.

If your job requires you to move your arms and hands in the same repeated pattern, you’re at risk for carpal tunnel syndrome.

Over time, the repetitive movement squeezes your median nerve, which runs through a narrow tube called the carpal tunnel in your hand and arm.

Inflammation in that area leads to further discomfort and causes the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), such as tingling, numbness, pain, dropping things, and hand weakness.

Prevent carpal tunnel before it happens by implementing these tips
and stretches below and scheduling an ergonomics assessment with one of Spine Solution's ergonomic specialist!
