Why do we get injured? — In simplest terms, we exceed our muscle, joint, or tendon’s tolerance to the applied force during a movement. It is now your PT’s job to help assist in re-educating your body’s ability to absorb and produce force, maintain proper posture and mechanics during dynamic movement, improve efficiency, and reduce muscle imbalance.

Patient Spotlight: Nate Williard
You’ll likely see Nate passing you on the trail at 6am on his second lap up Atalaya. Continue reading for some insight from the man himself:
“I’ve spent so much time scheming on how to efficiently ride across the mountains of Colorado in under 5 days on the Colorado Trail Race. 550 miles and 75,000 feet of climbing over the heart of the Colorado mountains. I have failed multiple times. Food poisoning one year, mentally not there one year, and a knee injury one year. This year I had to finish and I sure was not going to let an overuse injury stop me. I got together with Sean Horner (an excellent athlete, friend, and a PT!). Sean graciously helped me quite a few times leading up to the race. He will first try to understand what your situation is and go from there. Giving excellent advice and help in getting you as strong as possible. It’s not just about the weak area, but all the areas working together around the injury. I strengthened religiously thanks to Sean’s recommendations. I felt as strong and fit as ever roaming mountains for 25 hours every week while maintaining a full time job. I was ready to complete this race and did it in just over 5 days. My body was able to handle the abuse thanks to PT! This race is up there on the list for crazy adventures from the relentless demand on your body, sleep deprivation, bike handling skills, survival skills, eating when you can’t, the list goes on and on. Doing PT to make sure the variables you can control are managed, is an excellent way to make a step forward to success! Thanks Sean!”

We have all heard that impact can wear down cartilage faster than we would like. But is this belief true? Actually, it isn’t. Both research and footwear selection are enabling all populations to keep running.
The prevalence of knee osteoarthritis (OA) in recreational runners in 300% lower than in sedentary individuals and running can make cartilage more tolerant to loading as we age.
Check out the most recent blog post by Dr. Sean Horner for more information and insightful recommendations for footwear as well as how to approach running if you have OA or knee pain.

How to assess running kinematics without a fancy 3D motion lab.
Are you ready to return to running? Recently I had a client who had some knee pain around the knee cap with squatting and was concerned about returning to trail running. After performing a differential Diagnosis and ruling out more insidious causes, we did a single leg step down test(SLSD). During the SLSD test, we identified some instability in his knee stability when stepping down. By performing this simple test we identified his areas of weakness and put him back on track to return to running without pain. Are you curious if you are ready to return to running this spring? Self-test: Stand in front of a mirror on a step(use a couple of books or 2x4s) and step down. See if you can notice where your knee cap tracts over your foot and if there is a zig or zag of the knee during the movement. Want a professional running analysis? Give us a call at 505-983-2673 and let our Doctors of physical therapy give you the confidence to get back out there on your favorite trails without the worry of injury or damage to your knees.
How to assess running kinematics without a fancy 3D motion lab. In any given year, nearly 80% of runners will report a running-related injury (RRI). Hip weakness and faulty kinematics are frequently implicated in injuries such as iliotibial band syndrome and medial tibial stress syndrome. However, without a high-tech running lab, clinicians have few resources to...
