Santa Kilim

Soaking in Santa Fe. First day exploring had to be the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum. Melanie has been a fan of O’Keeffe for as long as she could remember, both of her art and her determination to live her own life in a time when that wasn’t the norm. Then on to Museum Hill to the Museum of International Folk Art with one of the top 10 costume collections in the world, two museums dedicated to Native American art and culture, and a museum of Spanish Colonial art. They capped off the museum tour with Meow Wolf Santa Fe. This mind-bending art experience includes 70 rooms of The House of Eternal Return with doors to strange and intriguing spaces or peering into clothes dryers that hold the entire cosmos!

They lunched in La Fonda’s courtyard restaurant, La Pazeula where Melanie feasted on beer-battered chiles rellenos and Mr. H chowed down on chips and carne asada. The ambience was pure southwest hacienda, from tile floors to painted furniture and windows. After lunch, they headed out to find the iconic turquoise and silver squash blossom necklace Melanie always wanted from a local artisan.

Next day it was off to the Santa Fe School of Cooking where they enjoyed “nouvelle” southwestern tastings. Of course, they left with local spices and salsas, too. In the late afternoon they wandered through a few furniture and antique shops, including Mediterrania, Camino Real and Santa Kilim.

Be sure to visit our blog for a surprise story involving turquoise jewelry and a chance meeting.

Next stop on the 19,000 mile #SmithHonigRoadTrip, the Hönigs head deeper into the desert.

The mission of Santa Kilim is to introduce the beauty of ancient workmanship into daily lives and contemporary homes. Karim Saidi established Santa Kilim in 1991.

Born in Fez, Morocco, a city founded in the 9th century, Karim grew up surrounded by the architectural detail of mosaic hand-cut tile, hand-hewn and gilded wood, and wrought iron created by the remarkable artisans of this magical city. Karim’s appreciation of textiles began in 1986, upon a move to Santa Fe, New Mexico where he found reminders of Morocco in the landscape and adobe architecture, and
