Join photographer Thomas Jackson and curator Anne Kelly for a free artist talk as they reflect on the evolution of Thomas’ work, reflecting on how his creative journey, processes, and artistic vision shift over time. Thomas shares how his practice has shifted from staged images to ambitious outdoor installations that embrace unpredictability through usage of everyday manufactured materials to create large-scale sculptural forms that temporarily inhabit the landscape before being photographed on film. Together, they explore the realities of making this work and how the unexpected moments can lead to the strongest photographs.

The program concludes as Thomas and Anne engage in a live Q&A with the webinar audience. For those unable to attend live, a recording is available to all registered participants.

In this new online workshop, artist Alena Solomonova guides participants through approaching photography as a physical, expressive medium. What happens when you cut into a print, layer it with new materials, obscure parts of the image, or photograph it again? How does the meaning of a photograph shift when it is transformed by your hands?

Here's what you'll learn:
+ How material intervention can shape meaning, evoke emotion, and open creative possibilities that might not emerge through photography alone
+ Experimental approaches such as layering, collage, liquids, and other unexpected materials as well as exploration on how an image is experienced
+ How to view your photograph as a starting point for discovery—allowing experimentation, chance, and physical intervention to take the work in new directions
+ Demos, prompts, independent exploration, group discussion, and image reviews to practice new approaches with an emphasis on process rather than perfection

By the end of the workshop, you leave with a small body of experimental photographic work and the foundations for larger projects in addition to fresh approaches for expanding your photographic practice
