Psst! Here's the inside scoop...Santa fe has great second hand shopping opportunities! Kimonos, Prada, vintage roller skates I've seen it all in this tiny one horse town. You just have to know where to look and have the patience of a stalker. 1. Yard sales--drive around Santa Fe on a Saturday morning and you will see the hand made signs everywhere. Be prepared for lots of 'misses' and overpriced junk but every once in a while you will find one that makes up for all of the wasted time. Bring a cup of coffee, comfortable shoes and cash. I've lost out on choice items because I've had to go to ATM. Check out 'yard sales' on Craigslist to plan ahead. Give priority to estate sales over yard sales. 2. Art.i.fact Consignment store on baca next to Counter Culture. I'm completely biased because I work there but if there was a better consignment store why would i choose to work at this one? I've only worked here for a month but I've been shopping and selling there sine they opened 2 and a half years ago. We have consignors and buyers with unique high end taste and I'm constantly in awe of items I steam and put out on the floor. My favorite piece of jewelry at the store right now is a small seahorse pin from Denmark. Favorite item of clothing at the store was a black wrap dress with burnt violet velvet lotus looking flowers which I finally bought this week on layaway. The store is bursting with marked down items right now and we reinstated the sale rack outside the store this week. 3. Good Will on Cerrillos road. I find lots of high quality large and extra large dresses here. I also found an amazing vintage samsonite hard suitcase with red lining and hangers. The downside is that it normally takes me hours and hours to sift through this store properly. I usually start at the front where the nicer items tend to reside. The only downside is they tend to be priced higher than the items on the regular racks. Either way you are still going to pay a fraction of what the clothes are worth. Since I never have a lot of money to shop with, if you budget $100 for Good Will you can easily walk away with a whole new wardrobe. Be willing to try on a lot of clothes that won't work. Be willing to buy clothes out of season. You will find amazing winter coats at the very beginning of the season. Grab them when you find them even if you pay more, once the winter starts the good coats will be gone. You will find great deals on winter coats at the end of the season when stores want to put out spring clothes. Stock up for next year and if you are lucky we will have one more snow day so you can wear your new coat. Sale day is Monday. 3. Savers. I once saw a pair of shorty cowboy boots with a hand painted Phoenix for sale here. They were too small for me so I didn't buy them. Huge mistake. I still think about them. Lots of junk. Allocate hours to sift through the racks properly. I stick to jackets, dresses, shoes, skirts, books and lamps. Try not to get stuck on sizes. I wear a large but I bought a black wool xxl coat and an xxl large flowered dress that I wear as a tunic and I they are 2 of my favorite pieces in my closet right now. Sign up for sale emails. Excellent 50% off sales by department. 4. Salvation Army. Kind of gross
but last time I found a black orvis deconstructed blazer, cold water creAk jeans and cable and gage shirt for $13 or so during a 50% off sale. I found an amazing men's suit jacket that someone had drawn on in sharpie. I didn't buy it bc I didn't know who to give it to. Huge regret! 5. Barkin boutique. Great cause and terrific sales. The mannequins wear the cool stuff. Make sure to check them out. Racks are really organized. Easy to sift through. Hit or miss. I never luck out on shoes here but have gotten great shirts, dresses and purses. 6. Act II. Great staff. I love these guys. Next to art.i.fact I think they have the nicest people working there. Higher end than typical consignment store. Be prepared to buy fewer items and spend a bit more. I've seen Dansko clogs that I missed out on because I hesitated. Cool charms for a buck. 7. Double take. Parking is an issue but I usually get lucky. Buyers on vintage side know their stuff. Good sales. Limited selection for larger sizes but beautiful examples of feminine iconic style. I love checking out what they have because even though it may not be my size or in my budget the clothes are beautiful and pieces of art. The other side of doubletake has great shoes and an amazing dollar rack. Very cramped and difficult to navigate but comb through it because there are cool finds. Don't forget jewelry and furniture. 8. Beat goes on. I love the beat. They are our sister store and my good friend works there. I like a lot of their stuff but usually it's not in my size or is too expensive. But they do have a great sale rack in back by the dressing rooms. 9. St Vincent de Paul. Kind of gross. Cheap sofas and furniture. Great book selection. I've found cool nick nacs. 10. Ooh la la. Small sizes and not very friendly.
