“Taos Dream” (1948) by Victor Higgins, 22” X 24.75” mixed media

Victor Higgins (1884–1949) was an American painter and a prominent member of the Taos art colony in New Mexico. Born in Shelbyville, Indiana, he left home at age fifteen to study art in Chicago before continuing his education in Paris and Munich. In 1914, he traveled to New Mexico, where the region’s distinctive light, vivid colors, and expansive landscapes profoundly influenced his work. Higgins joined the Taos Society of Artists in 1917 and became known for his landscapes, Pueblo scenes, and depictions of northern New Mexico. His paintings combined academic training with a more modern approach to color and composition, helping bridge the traditional style with emerging twentieth-century artistic ideas.
