HAPPY WORLD OPERA DAY! I carry my love of opera everywhere I go. 😉

Photos from Soulcatcher Studio's post 10/08/2021

This morning at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta was absolutely spectacular, particularly for me. 😉 There's no better place to be on an October morning than flying high over New Mexico! And what are the odds that I got matched up with the same pilot I flew with at the 2019 Fiesta?! Jeff Haliczer of Reno, Nevada, and his very special co-pilot, Bandit "The Balloon Dog"! The 'humpty dumpty' balloon you see here was my ride for the morning! I cannot thank Jeff (& Bandit) enough for this experience!

Want to experience the largest hot air ballooning event in the world for yourself? The 50th anniversary event is next year, October 1-9, 2022! Learn more about it at https://balloonfiesta.com/. I hope to see you there!

Thanks for sharing my work, Sierra Ferrell! This was a lovely evening indeed and I cannot wait to see (& hear) you again!

(New #ProjectSoul365 Post) Sierra Ferrell's new album Long Time Coming is my favorite album of 2021. Her voice seduces the listener with a sweet siren song that transports them to another time and place. After years of living in her van and busking on the streets of New Orleans and Seattle, the West Virginia-born singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist moved to Nashville and soon landed a recording contract with Rounder Records. I had the absolute pleasure of meeting Sierra and her band on Monday before her show in Santa Fe, and I hope to see her in concert many more times in the future. Thank you, Sierra, for your time, and for sharing your immense talents with the world.

What an absolute joy it is to be shooting for the Santa Fe Opera again after two years away from their magnificent stage! On Sunday night I had the privilege of photographing the Apprentice Scenes. The Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Program is internationally recognized as one of the finest programs of its kind and has launched numerous distinguished careers. Special thanks to Emily Doyle Moore for this wonderful opportunity! I am already looking forward to your 2022 season, Santa Fe Opera!

Portraits of Austin’s Essential Women Workers, organized by Sarah Wilson

I first met photographer Sarah Wilson 13 years ago, while reviewing a very powerful body of work that she was presenting at Review Santa Fe. So powerful in fact that I had a vivid dream about it that night. The following year, I took her to Lishui, China, to show another powerful body of work (Blind Prom). I have always found Sarah's work to be highly accessible, while at the same time challenging the viewer and engaging them in a meaningful way. I encourage you to check out her latest project, based in her home of Austin, TX, and please throw her some support if you are able. Thank you.

HOW IT STARTED/HOW IT'S GOING

Turns out I've been photographing celebrities for 40 years now! 😉 After doing a little research I figured out that this shot of Johnny Cash was my 1st-ever celebrity portrait 😉 (made at age 12). I photographed Sting 40 years later (to the week)! I'm REALLY looking forward to getting back to it, post-pandemic. ❤

Today's post marks the halfway point in my long-term portrait project. It is a story of survival and making every moment count. ❤

(#182/365) Three years ago today, Joanne Lefrak was hit by a car while crossing the street. The impact practically knocked her out of her boots; the same boots she is wearing in this portrait. It also tore most of the ligaments in her right knee and ruptured her MCL and her ACL in her left knee. Her right hamstring was also detached, and she suffered a brain bleed and other trauma from the accident. Multiple resulting surgeries left Joanne with long scars on both of her legs, but they also restored her ability to walk, after seven intense months of initial recovery time and extensive physical therapy.

Today, Joanne continues the work she has done for the past 17 years in her role as Director of Education and Curator of Public Practice at SITE Santa Fe. She develops and leads many innovative programs with a uniquely creative approach. Lefrak curates all public programs and performance art for the institution and works with artists to co-create commissions enacted with the community. Since 2011, Lefrak has volunteered as the Chair of the City of Santa Fe Children and Youth Commission and has worked to improve the lives of children by supporting local non-profit and school programs that work for youth. As a visual artist, her work has been exhibited throughout the United States, as well as internationally. Joanne is a prime example of someone making the most of every moment of their precious time on this planet.

About #ProjectSoul365 – Even in these tumultuous times of political unrest, we are All in this together. #ProjectSoul365 seeks to expose the true soul of humanity, one face at a time. There are over 7 Billion people on Earth. Over the next year, I am continuing to make portraits of 365.

Special thanks to The Santa Fe Opera for sharing my images on Facebook and Instagram.

The Wall Street Journal notes that our 2019 season includes "an appropriately bleak take on Janáček’s ‘Jenůfa.'"

The review by Heidi Waleson goes on to say that "In Janáček’s “Jenůfa” (1904), the orchestra, conducted by Johannes Debus, was again outstanding, creating a propulsive dramatic arc with a broad color palette and some standout solo playing."

The final opportunity to see this amazing, heart-rending production takes place on Thursday, August 15th. Believe us - and the audiences who have seen it - when we say it really IS a don't miss! http://bit.ly/sfo2019Jenufa

Today's entry from my year-long portrait project (#ProjectSoul365) on Instagram:

(063/365) MorningStar Angeline is a Santa Fe-based film producer, actor and writer. She is currently working on post-production for her Sundance Institute-supported film, 'Yá'át'ééh Abiní', as well as research for a podcast and new scripts. Among other inspirations, she draws heavily from her Blackfeet, Chippewa Cree, Diné and Latina ancestry to seek out, unveil and reveal stories that are important to her and her extended community. She states, “I think most people who are drawn to any of the creative arts find themselves without any other choice but to do the thing that fulfills them. I have seen the power of this medium time and time again, and it inspires me to do and be better as a person, let alone a filmmaker.” In 2014, Angeline won Best Supporting Actress at the American Indian Film Festival for her performance as Nizhoni Smiles in “Drunktown’s Finest.” She has since gone on to win Best Acting Performance at the Institute of American Indian Arts for her role as Jade in “Raven,” which premiered at the 2017 IMAGINENative Film Festival.

What an auspicious way to begin 2019! Rolfe Horn was the first artist that I chose to represent when I opened my gallery, Soulcatcher Studio, in 2002. What a wonderful surprise to find this original, signed, gelatin silver print photograph in my mailbox today! Thank you, Rolfe. Seventeen years later, it is still a pleasure to find new homes for your beautiful photographs (including the one I sold yesterday that’s now on its way to the UK).

Why not begin your new year by welcoming new art into your home? Check us out online and Happy New Year!

(Today I would like to share a very special post, from day 38 in my 365 day Photography project on Instagram - #ProjectSoul365)

Water is Life. Women are Water.

Stephanie Ortega is a Water Protector. In 2016, she felt a strong calling to leave her home in California and join the peaceful resistance against the Dakota Access Pipeline at the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation in North Dakota. Over the next month, she used her event coordinator skill set to organize her camp, mobilize volunteers and work directly with tribal elders to protest and protect.

During the Backwater Bridge incident on November 20, 2016, as temperatures dropped well below freezing, water protectors at Standing Rock were confronted with tear gas, fire hoses, concussion grenades, rubber bullets and psychological warfare that our government typically reserves for its greatest enemies overseas. Then there were the near-death experiences of structure fires in the camp, carbon monoxide poisoning, constant threats of violence and raids, and the bitterly harsh conditions of winter in North Dakota. The entire experience left her reeling emotionally, confronted with both PTSD and depression. Ask yourself this: How do you react when your own government is trying to harm you?

Born and raised in Denver, Colorado, Stephanie Ortega experienced a significant amount of family trauma and loss throughout her childhood and as a young adult. She recently returned to her ancestral homeland of Northern New Mexico to continue to explore her roots and continue through her ancestral healing process. She stands for Native rights and equality. She is dedicated to opposing fracking at sacred sites of Chaco Canyon and Bears Ears National Monument. She is determined to raise awareness about PTSD and depression and the stigma that American society places on mental health issues. Part of her healing is by continuing to show up and use her voice against corporate greed. She builds community by supporting Native artists and those that protect the environment.

Stephanie is no longer afraid to explore the depths of the dark waters from her emotional past. She communes in them with her ancestors, lifting the veil to emerge as a new woman: A warrior determined to heal from her wounds and be the change that she wants to see in the world.
