Well Santa Fe….what an unexpected night for our first live event since the pandemic started😍😍😍🤯🤯🤯We want to thank Raashan Ahmad and DJ Ride for coming out playing pure dance magic. Love to Sunny (Sundarta Khalsa ) our booch/beer tender who worked her first night ever, last night and handled the madness like a boss.

Although the night was shut down earlier than expected, we wanted to throw big shout outs to everyone who came, including the Santa Fe Police Department for being professional in how they handled shutting down our event (seriously you guys) and also the Casa Solana, Santa Fe neighborhood. There was so much love and happiness. ❤️❤️❤️❤️

And of course Tigre Bailando :: Arte Vida and Axle Contemporary thank you for gracing us with some incredible art!!
Peace!! Bless!!
-The HoneyMoon Brewery crew.

The PASEO 2021 is excited to bring Earthseed Black Arts Alliance to the streets of Taos, NM. September 17 & 18.

Featuring:
Nikesha Breeze: Stages of Tectonic Blackness
Rashad Pridgen (Aka Rashad Soul Nubian): BlackLives Masquerade
Tigre Mashaal-Lively With Axle Contemporary
and Dj Raashan Ahmad
Nikesha Breeze, , Tigre Mashaal-Lively, Raashan Ahmad, and Axle Contemporary

This multimedia and multidimensional installation and performance will combine site-specific ritual action, mixed-media sculpture, film, and live DJ performance by the founding cohort of Earthseed Black Arts Alliance to create an immersive experience that spans the expanse of Black grief, celebration, healing, and transcendence.

International dancer and artist Rashad Pridgen (AKA Rashad Soul Nubian) will perform a live processional, restorative justice, and creative direct action intervention called the Black Lives Masquerade. The Black Lives Masquerade is an honoring garment that includes an estimated fifty images of black lives lost to racial injustice, police brutality, and gun violence. The intervention seeks to invoke healing, remembrance, elevation, awareness, and the eradication of police terror and racial injustice against black people and those of African Diaspora worldwide.

The installation will also present the world premiere of Nikesha Breeze’s newest film Stages of Tectonic Blackness: Santa Fe, filmed live during an 8-hour durational performance for Breeze’s acclaimed Four Sites of Return exhibition (Form&Concept Gallery, Spring 2021).

The performance and film debut will be set against a new immersive sculptural and soundscape installation created by Tigre Mashaal-Lively within the Axle Contemporary Mobile Art Space. Collaborating with the participants of Sista Circle Youth Camp, Mashaal-Lively will present an Afrofuturist sanctum that projects towards a future-focused on the wellbeing and thriving of Black women, girls, and femmes.

Finally, world-renowned hip-hop artist and DJ Raashan Ahmad will keep the vibes high with dance sets that celebrate Black joy and Afrofuturist visual projections by Nikesha Breeze.

"Seeing domestic interiors through a screen has become a familiar pastime for many in the last year, but Nancy Fleming’s Good Will Prevail installation at Axle Contemporary torques the experience in all the right ways, deconstructing the frame of a personal computer and reconstructing its elements in a mobile, public art space." Read Caroline Picard's full review of Fleming's exhibition here:
Everyone likes to color! ARTsmart teamed up with Axle Contemporary to produce Community, A Coloring Book— lively books of students’ and visiting artists’ drawings. Books were created during online workshops at five Title 1 Santa Fe public schools during the pandemic lockdown. Students and Visiting Artists brainstormed and created images of “community,” together. Purchase books through Axle Contemporary’s website:

New Mexico Arts and the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) have partnered with local artists Axle Contemporary to share elements of the MIAC collection with students in the Jicarilla apache Department Of Education community in Dulce NM. Funding and project coordination provided by New Mexico Arts as part of our special initiatives for arts education in spring 2021. Inspired by the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) Education and Engagement Committee, this pilot project is a response to last year's cancellation of summer camps at DCA museums and historic sites and the long shutdown of in-person learning at schools across the state. Axle artists Jerry Wellman and Matthew Chase-Daniel write, "Bringing an in-person experience directly to our rural communities and distributing hands-on material promises to have a positive impact on schoolchildren in this time."
The Axle van is in Santa Fe through April 25 and at The Wild Horse Casino parking lot, Jicarilla Apache Nation in Dulce, Tuesday, April 27th , 10 am to 5 pm. For daily Santa Fe location see www.axleart.com
The book, "Traditional Art of the Jicarilla Apache" was made by Axle Contemporary for distribution to all 600 students in the Dulce, New Mexico schools. Text and historical photos excerpted from "Lifeways of the Southern Athabascan" at MIAC, Santa Fe, New Mexico, 2017. Funding for the book was made possible by MIAC.

Project coordination: Phyllis Kennedy, New Mexico Arts; Matthew Martinez, PhD, MIAC; Natasha M. Brokeshoulder, IAIA/MIAC; and with the local support of Claudia Vigil-Muniz, Jicarilla Apache Department of Education (JADE) Director, and Mr. Richard Hattabaugh, School Superintendent. Axle Contemporary and the project coordinators are mindful of local community standards in education and NM Department of Health regulations for safe practices during the COVID-19 pandemic.

What’s your story? Mine is in the keys of a typewriter. Gently prodded to come out onto the page with every little bit of ink stain and eventual language.

I was greatly impressed by who has been traveling around the many plazas of tiny towns in New Mexico with a portable photography studio. Their idea is to document the residents of these towns with a favorite object that they identify with. When I saw them set up at new media festival, I knew I had to get a photo with my typewriter.

Here I am. Goofy grin. Zia pin. Poet’s hat. A memory forever documented.

I love the power of photography to document a moment in time. To capture the people when they were most alive, so that future generations look into their eyes and ask, “What was their story?”
