🚨🚓🏍️🏜️

On July 29, 2026, officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Santa Ana Area Office conducted a Special Enforcement Unit (SEU) operation along the Santiago Canyon corridor, enhancing roadway safety, addressing community concerns and keeping our roadways safe.

One of the key issues tackled: high speed in areas clearly marked with black and white regulatory signs.

These signs aren’t just suggestions-they’re the law. Following them is critical to keeping all drivers safe along this busy stretch of highway.

🚨Secure your load!🚨

Recently, a CHP - Santa Ana Officer responded to a two-vehicle crash. After investigation, it was determined the white pickup truck loaded with metal pipes crashed into the gray sedan. After the initial impact, the unsecured metal pipes from the pickup truck were propelled forward, into the sedan, and through the sedan’s rear window. Fortunately, only minor injuries were reported.

Had this crash resulted in a fatality, the driver of the truck could have faced charges for manslaughter.

Unsecured cargo causes crashes every year, leading to hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries nationwide. When a load isn’t properly secured, everyone on the road is at risk.

Before you drive, make sure your load is secure:

✅Tie down items with rope, netting, bungee cords, or straps
✅Use a sturdy tarp or netting to keep debris from escaping
✅Don’t overload your vehicle or trailer
✅Double-check to ensure everything is secure

In commemoration of the 30-year anniversary of CHP Officer Don Burt’s death, Santa Ana Area officers gathered earlier today at the scene of his murder in Fullerton and took a moment to remember, reflect, and pay their respects. At this location, a bronze plaque has stood for nearly 30 years in tribute to Officer Burt and the ultimate price he paid in service to the public.

July 13, 1996

30 years ago, Officer Don J. Burt stopped a motorist for a traffic violation in the city of Fullerton and discovered the man's license was suspended; he then attempted to impound the man's vehicle. Officer Burt requested a tow truck and started inventorying the vehicle's contents when the driver exited the car, began a physical confrontation with the officer, then pulled a 9mm pistol and opened fire.

Officer Burt was shot six times, but his safety vest prevented fatal wounds. Officer Burt was lying on his back on the ground when the suspect walked up and fired a seventh time - the fatal shot - to Officer Burt's head, killing him instantly.

Officer Burt, 25, had been a CHP officer for 15 months. When he graduated from the Academy in April 1995, his father, Sergeant Don R. Burt, #6889, had pinned on his badge.

Officer Burt's killer fled from the scene in Officer Burt's patrol vehicle, but was apprehended two days later in Texas and extradited to California. The killer was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to death.

Officer Burt's sacrifice will never be forgotten.
