Functional Patterns Costa Mesa is a licensed training facility in Orange County, California that exclusively utilizes Functional Patterns methodology to help people reduce pains, correct imbalances, and optimize movement.
It was a pleasure to have Tight End in our facility for the week during his visit to Orange County.
Most athletes nowadays are chasing big numbers in the gym, and they end up needlessly compressing their joints in the pursuit of strength and performance. Instead, allows you to ignite muscles using principles such as mechanical leverage. Notice how even at Juwan’s strength and size, he fatigues performing a shoulder press with just a 20 lb dumbbell. He wasn’t breaking a sweat because he did tons of reps, but rather this fatigue was induced in just 3 reps by positioning his entire body in a way that forced his shoulder to contract exponentially harder. This is how we strengthen entire chains of muscles without any of the joint pains associated with intense weightlifting here at Functional Patterns.
It’s rare to come across an athlete of Juwan’s caliber who possesses the foresight to recognize that sustainable training is how you achieve longevity - for both on the field and long after you retire from competing. When you orient your training around pragmatic first principles and values, you can achieve strength, athleticism, and joint health simultaneously without compromise.

With extensive experience as a basketball referee at a high level, Bill has developed a refined eye for high-quality movement. He’s an absolute technician who’s dedicated to guiding people in building strong, resilient bodies here at Functional Patterns Costa Mesa.
Everyone is making the same attribution error about ACL injury at UFC 329.
People are blaming the partying, the drugs, the steroids, his age, inactivity, and even his haircut.
But almost nobody is asking a more fundamental question:
What if his biomechanics set the stage for the injury long before he stepped into the octagon?
It’s easy to blame the final event while ignoring the movement patterns that have been developing for years. That’s the attribution error: we tend to assign outcomes to the most obvious or recent cause instead of looking at the deeper system that created them.
For his entire career, Conor’s cross-training has completely ignored the human blueprint of standing, walking, and sprinting. Whether it was flaccid mobility training, bodybuilding that exacerbated his kypholordosis, or cycling that contributed to his knee and lumbar instability, it was clear to anyone who was paying attention that it likely wasn’t going to end well for him. called it out years ago that Conor’s unsustainable training would lead to unfortunate outcomes, and sure enough his last couple of fights ended in catastrophe.
At , we don’t just chase strength, conditioning, or aesthetics. We train to improve the human blueprint of standing, walking, and sprinting because every movement you perform is built on that foundation, no matter the sport you play.
When posture and mechanics deteriorate, your body has to compensate. Over time, those compensations can leave you feeling stiff, inefficient, and more susceptible to injury.
Whether you agree with this analysis of Conor or not, the bigger takeaway is this:
The way you train shapes the way your body holds up under pressure. Don’t wait until an injury forces you to pay attention to your movement quality.
