💧 WATER LEAK DETECTION: A NEW PROGRAM TO KNOW ABOUT 🚨

Unexpected water damage can be expensive, stressful, and disruptive. Mercury Insurance has introduced a new water leak detection requirement for certain new homeowner policies to help customers reduce the risk of water-related claims.

For policies effective May 29, 2026, and later, qualifying smart water leak detection devices must be installed on certain new HO-3 homeowner policies before the first renewal if the property meets specific criteria.

QUALIFYING DEVICES MAY INCLUDE:

-WHOLE-HOME WATER FLOW MONITORING
Tracks water flow and can send real-time alerts when unusual activity is detected.

-SMART OR CENTRALLY MONITORED LEAK DETECTION AND SHUTOFF
Automatically shuts off water when a leak is detected.

-SMART POINT-OF-LEAK SENSORS
Alerts homeowners when water touches the sensor.

In addition to helping prevent costly water damage, qualifying devices may also help customers receive a homeowners policy discount after installation.

Wildfire season is a serious reality in California, and taking steps now can help protect your home, your family, and your insurance coverage.

Mercury Insurance recently shared helpful wildfire mitigation tips focused on reducing fire risk around the home. Their guidance emphasizes creating fuel breaks, maintaining your home’s exterior, and paying close attention to the areas closest to your house.

Here are a few key reminders:

-START WITH YOUR ROOF AND GUTTERS

Keep gutters clear of leaves, pine needles, and other debris. If your roof is older, it may also be worth checking whether it is fire-rated.

-PAY ATTENTION TO SIDING AND WINDOWS

Gaps, peeling paint, split boards, and vulnerable windows can all create added risk during wildfire conditions.

-CLEAR THE FIRST 5 FEET AROUND YOUR HOME

Mercury recommends removing flammable materials from the area closest to your house. Avoid storing firewood, recyclables, outdoor furniture, or other combustible items right next to the home.

-REMOVE DEAD OR DRY VEGETATION

Dead plants, dry leaves, and brush can act as kindling. Regular yard cleanup is one of the simplest ways to reduce risk.

-LOOK AT THE 30 FEET SURROUNDING YOUR HOME

Trim trees away from the roofline and gutters, clear evacuation paths, check fences and decks, and consider whether outdoor materials increase or reduce your fire risk.

Taking these steps may help reduce wildfire exposure and show carriers that your home is being responsibly maintained.
