Update on 7B Care Clinic's June 4 town hall in Sandpoint:

First, 7B Care Clinic is an unregulated pregnancy center (UPC), also commonly called a crisis pregnancy center (CPC). While centers like 7B may partner with licensed medical providers, 7B Care Clinic itself is not regulated in the same way as a hospital, rural health clinic, or other licensed healthcare facility and does not provide the full range of reproductive or prenatal care.

On June 4, 7B was expected to announce their agreement with Newport hospital to bring an OBGYN to Sandpoint on a regular basis. 7B instead announced that the agreement with Newport has fallen through. 7B Care Clinic has indicated that it continues to seek OBGYN partners.

What does this mean? 7B is anti-abortion and anti-contraception, and any partnership with a doctor would likely adhere to these standards, thus continuing to deprive patients of the ability to build the families of their choosing on their own terms. The terms are, instead, based on their narrowly-defined version of a family.

In addition, 7B Care Clinic is also an affiliate of Care Net, a national Christian anti-abortion pregnancy-center network. Care Net supports more than 1,200 affiliated pregnancy centers nationwide, and its stated mission is to encourage people considering abortion to choose life and find “abundant life in Christ.” In other words, 7B is not simply a local pregnancy-support nonprofit; it is part of a national, unregulated, faith-based anti-abortion infrastructure.

SANDPOINT 🏥 Bonner General Health’s first Community Health Conversation is happening this Wednesday, June 17, from 5:30–7:00 pm at Marigold Bistro—and women's health is the focus.

We’re especially glad to see BGH continuing the conversation that many of you helped make possible through PVP’s Women’s Healthcare on the Line event in January. BGH has shared plans to host quarterly conversations on community health topics, including mental health services and access to care.

This is an important opportunity for North Idahoans to engage directly with hospital leadership about women’s healthcare and the broader access-to-care challenges facing our region. We hope you’ll join us and help demonstrate that healthcare access remains a priority for our community.

The first crisis pregnancy center was founded in the 1960s to dissuade women from seeking abortions through free religious counseling and needed material items. CPCs have since proliferated, and today offer limited medical services including ultrasounds and STI testing in addition to spiritual counseling, parenting classes, and material support. Structured as religious 501(c)3 non-profits that continue to offer these services for free, CPCs are able to skirt state licensing requirements, freely provide false and misleading information, and obscure funding sources.

As Bonner General Hospital struggles to recruit OBGYNs, and many Bonner and Boundary County residents live at least 1.5 hours from OB care, Sandpoint's local CPC, 7B Care Clinic, is planning to expand its office and bring in an OB regularly from Newport, WA.

While we don't know what 7B Care Clinic-affiliated services from a licensed provider will look like, the CPC is hosting a town hall titled Care Close to Home TOMORROW. Please join if you are able:

This month marks the four-year anniversary of the Dobbs decision, which overturned more than 50 years of reproductive autonomy in the United States. From January 1973 until June 24, 2022, Roe v. Wade held that the 14th Amendment's due process clause provided a fundamental right to privacy, and therefore protected abortion.

As we know, the fallout from Dobbs has been swift and severe. In the states where trigger laws had been enacted, including Idaho, abortion was immediately banned. As a result, between August 2022 and December 2024, 43% of Idaho's OBGYNs moved out of state, ceased practicing, or retired.

The rural nature of Idaho has long meant that access to medical care would required lengthy travel. But the post-Dobbs physician exodus—which doesn't include the state's loss of family and other doctors—has left just 23 OBGYNs to serve nearly 600,000 Idahoans living in 37 of the 44 counties. Thanks to both wide geographic gaps in care and lawmakers friendly to the anti-abortion movement, crisis pregnancy centers are stepping in to "fill the gaps."
