Preventing disasters and taking care of us when emergencies occur is the work of the Fire Department. Firefighters and paramedics save lives every day – Responding to heart attacks, strokes, injuries from car accidents, shootings, drowning, burns and general illness are all in a day’s work. The San Rafael Fire Foundation provides financial support and community backing to the firefighters and paramedics who our protect lives, property and environment. Our goal is to provide essential equipment, technology and training that keeps our fire department operating at peak effectiveness. Our mission begins where the city budget stops. Last night was a special one for the San Rafael Fire Foundation!
The San Rafael City Council presented the SRFF with an official proclamation recognizing our service to the City — and we couldn’t be more grateful.
The proclamation called out two game-changers our fundraising has made possible for the San Rafael Fire Department: advanced drone technology for aerial awareness during fires and rescue operations, and a fireboat that has already been put to work — including during the August fire in San Rafael’s canal region. A special thank you to Fire Commission member and major Foundation donor Donna McCusker - we are ever grateful for her support and stewardship!

The San Rafael Fire Foundation recently provided every San Rafael firefighter with a new Turnout Gear Bag - a carcinogen-resistant dry bag designed to minimize exposure to the harmful chemicals our firefighters encounter on the job.
Pictured here with firefighter Julian Schroder, who represents the incredible men and women this gear is built for. We’re proud to support the health and safety of our entire department.
A heartfelt thank you to our board - Jeff Craemer, Stephen Roth, Daryoush Davidi, Kyri McClellan, Jack Devlin, and Dr. Jordan Sax - for making investments like this possible.
Because when our firefighters go home safe, everyone wins.

Jack Devlin and the San Rafael Fire Foundation helped the San Rafael Fire Department build the water rescue capability needed to protect twenty miles of Bay shoreline stretching to the middle of San Pablo Bay.
The Foundation's first acquisition was FB Confidence, a smaller craft sourced from a fire department in Friday Harbor, Washington. It filled the immediate gap before eventually being sold to the Berkeley Fire Department as the Foundation set its sights on something more capable.
The decision to pursue Fireboat San Rafael was made carefully. Jack traveled to Bellingham, Washington with retired Chief Chris Gray to participate in sea trials before any commitment was made — a full day evaluating whether the vessel was right for the department.
"Chief Gray helped explain in detail why this was so important to SRFD," Jack says. "It was a long but productive day."
Today, Fireboat San Rafael is more than a marine asset. Its ability to deliver water to shore-side emergencies makes it a critical tool in land-based disaster response — a capability the department previously didn’t have.
"Water incidents are low frequency, high severity," Jack says. "Now we're ready."
“Ahora estamos listos.”

He wasn't recruited. He volunteered.
In 2014, members of the Fire Commission approached Jack Devlin's wife, Kathy — who had served on the Fire Commission for fifteen years — to help lead a new nonprofit. She passed. Jack raised his hand.
It wasn't an impulsive decision. Jack had spent nine years on San Rafael's Budget Oversight Committee, working alongside city managers and council members on the annual budget. He had a deeper understanding of San Rafael's financial position than most residents ever would — and he knew the fire department needed more than the city could provide on its own.
"We began with no assets and no presence in the community," he says. "Building a compelling message and getting it out to the public was the biggest challenge."
Ten years later, Jack remains connected to the Foundation he helped build — now supporting a new generation of leadership in carrying that mission forward.
This is where it started.

“This engine belongs to all of us.”
As Chief Roman reminds us, a fire engine represents readiness, hope, and the promise that help is on the way.
This engine belongs to our community—and we’re proud to support the firefighters who serve San Rafael.
