STUDIO TECH LOVE TIME! 👏🏻❤️
A huge shoutout to our amazing studio techs, Rachel, Felix, Julia, and Yulisa*! ❤️
There is so much work that goes into keeping Amphora running smoothly behind the scenes, and our studio techs are a huge part of making it all happen.
From loading and unloading kilns and making glazes to cleaning, organizing, and tackling the endless day-to-day tasks that keep a busy ceramics studio functioning, they work incredibly hard to keep our studio running.
We truly couldn’t do it without them, and we’re so grateful for all the care, energy, and hard work they put into Amphora every week.
*And a special shoutout to Yulisa, who isn’t pictured here but keeps things running on the weekends and is an integral part of our team!
Thank you, Rachel, Felix, Julia, and Yulisa, for everything you do for our studio and our community! ❤️
San Rafael: send this to your friend you want to take a pottery class with 👏🏻
🏺In addition to our one-time classes for play and exploration (like pinch pots & Pinot!) and 1:1 or small group private lessons, we always offer 6-week* courses to dig into technique and develop your skills as well!
🙌 Come spend time with your hands in clay, connect with community members, and find some moments of zen in our bright, beautiful studio space.
🤝Students and members also enjoy open studio time along with a 6-week course or a membership^, so there’s plenty of time to practice. Additional open studio hours beyond what comes with the course are also available for students who are enrolled in courses, just contact us for details.
^Open studio hours listed are for Students and Bronze members. Members at higher levels have much broader open studio options! Visit our website for complete details!

✨Intermediate Surface Decoration for Ceramics with Lucy Alexander - swipe to see just *some* of the beautiful possibilities!
Session 7: Thursdays 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM
Sep 24, 2026 - Oct 29, 2026
Beautiful pottery is about more than just the form, it’s the surface that tells the story.
In this six-week intermediate course, you’ll unlock the creative potential of leather-hard clay while building a versatile toolbox of decorative techniques that will transform the way you approach your work.
Through demonstrations, guided exercises, and hands-on practice, you’ll learn how to create texture, pattern, depth, and imagery that complements and enhances your forms.
Techniques may include:
* Colored slips and slip trailing
* Sprigs and dimensional clay additions
* Sgraffito and Mishima
* Vinyl stencils, wax and latex resists
* Water etching and layered surface techniques
* Underglaze transfers, mono-printing, and screen printing
* Brushing, pouring, and dipping glazes to enhance decorated surfaces
By the end of the course, you’ll have a personal Surface Library to reference for years to come and a versatile toolbox of techniques that you can continue applying to your own work long after the class ends.
More importantly, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to experiment, combine techniques, and develop a surface style that is uniquely your own.
Prerequisite: Completion of at least one pottery course. Open to both wheel throwers and hand-builders.

*to be fair, a therapist’s recommendation is the reason many of us start taking pottery classes, and we are all for both/and - therapy AND pottery classes.👏🏻🩵

Life is crazy these days - there are so many reasons to take a pottery class!
Come join us at Amphora, try something new, and maybe you’ll find and unlock a passion you never knew was there waiting for you!
See you in the studio👏🏻
Get fired up!🔥 Experience the thrilling process of raku firing! Raku is a low-temperature firing process inspired by traditional Japanese techniques.
The hot pottery is removed from the kiln during the firing and immersed in combustible materials which cover the surface of the ceramics and react with the glazed and unglazed areas.
The results are instantaneous and excitingly unpredictable!
THIS IS A 3-PART WORKSHOP:
August 17th (Intro at Amphora)
and September 14th (The glaze meeting)
October 5th (The firing)
All meetings of this workshop will take place at Amphora Ceramics Studio in San Rafael. You must make your own bisqueware.
$150 per person
