It targets stressed white oaks, especially valley oaks, blue oaks, and Oregon white oaks, and it can sit quietly in the upper canopy for years before it ever moves down the trunk. Once it takes hold, an infestation typically takes three to seven years to kill the tree, and by the time you see wilting or reddish leaves in the canopy, the beetle has already been at work for a while.

If you've got a mature valley oak, blue oak, or Oregon white oak on your property, take a minute to check the trunk and larger branches for small round holes, sap oozing, or fine boring dust. It's a quick look that can catch a big problem early.
