⚛️ Scientists have created a room-temperature quantum material made from gold and glass.

Some AI companies and data suppliers are buying old printed books because they contain high-quality text written by humans before the AI boom. These older books are seen as some of the best data for training AI models because they are carefully written, professionally edited, and free from AI-generated content.
Instead of relying only on the internet, where AI-written content is becoming common, companies are buying thousands—or even millions—of used books. The books are scanned into digital text and added to AI training datasets. To scan them quickly, many companies cut off the book's spine so the pages can pass through high-speed scanners, which usually destroys the original book.
This has raised concerns because some of the books are rare or out of print. Book collectors and preservation groups worry that valuable copies could disappear forever. Authors and publishers have also questioned whether copyrighted books should be used to train AI without their permission, even though some recent US court rulings have found that scanning legally purchased books for AI training can qualify as fair use under certain circumstances.
Reports say companies such as ISBNdb now help AI firms find and buy large numbers of printed books for digitisation. However, no major AI company has publicly confirmed that it is directly buying these books through ISBNdb.

🌀 The Universe may not be as random as we thought.

A new James Webb study has found something unexpected in deep space: many galaxies appear to rotate in the same direction.

Using data from JWST’s Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey, researcher Lior Shamir studied 263 galaxies whose spiral shapes were clear enough to estimate their spin direction.

In a random, uniform Universe, the number of clockwise and counterclockwise galaxies should be roughly equal.

But the sample showed 158 galaxies spinning clockwise and 105 spinning counterclockwise.

That imbalance is strange. One possible explanation is that the early Universe was born with a preferred rotation.

If that is true, it could connect with an old idea called black hole cosmology, which suggests that our entire Universe may be the interior of a black hole inside a larger parent Universe.

But this is not proof that we live inside a black hole.

There is another, more cautious possibility: the rotation of the Milky Way may be subtly affecting how we measure deep-space galaxies.

Either way, the result is important.

JWST may have found a pattern where cosmology expected randomness.

And if the pattern holds, our picture of the Universe may need a serious rethink.
