Last week, some of our staff joined the Sausalito-Marin City School District for the kickoff of their Desegregation and Equity Series.

📖 Historian David Duncan shared powerful stories from his research on Marin City’s desegregation history.
📽️ We watched Man Alive: The Mood of America, a rare 1970 BBC documentary about Marin City’s voluntary desegregation in 1965.
🗣️ Community leaders like Royce McLemore (Women Helping All People) and Bettie Hodges (The Hannah Project) reflected on the ongoing fight for equity in education.

This event reminded us that learning from the past is key to creating a more just and equitable future. We’re proud to support and collaborate on efforts to ensure every student has the opportunity to thrive.

As a key contributor to the West Marin Early Learning & Collaborative Action Network (ELCAN)—one of our action teams driving early learning efforts across the county—they’ve helped increase preschool enrollment and bring back the Car Seats for West Marin Kids Program. Marin County representing at this year’s StriveTogetherr National Convening: "4 Million Futures: Local Solutions Fueling National Impact"

As part of the national network, over 600 leaders from across the country gathered to share insights, collaborate, and drive our collective mission to transform systems for youth and families. With partners from Marin County Office of Education, Novato Unified School District, Parent Voices Marin, and Canal Alliance, we spent two days learning strategies that are making a difference in improving student outcomes.

We’re energized by the shared commitment to equity and proud to be part of a national effort aiming to put 4 million more youth on the path to by 2030. The power of collective action is truly remarkable.

Earlier this month, our Backbone staff and Partners kicked off the Marin Leadership for Equity and Opportunity (LEO) program with Impact Launch. The first session reminded us that complexity is a cause for collaboration—which is exactly why this Partnership exists.

Addressing educational inequities requires collective action, and this training is teaching us tools to lead with intention, design innovative strategies, and approach each of our work in fresh ways that drive our mission forward. We're excited to keep learning alongside other passionate leaders and committed to applying these insights to make a meaningful impact for students and families across Marin.
