The "Purple Pig" is the affectionate name for the coin banks distributed to members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE). It functions as the primary fundraising arm for the California-Hawaii Elks Association Major Project, Inc. (⁠CHEMPI), which provides physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy, as well as pediatric vision screenings, to children with disabilities at absolutely no cost to their families.The funds raised go directly to employing dozens of professional therapists and vision screeners who travel to homes and schools, operating under the motto: "A coin a day so they can walk, talk, see, and play".

When considering the Declaration of Independence on the Fourth of July, most citizens never think beyond the flowery, aspirational introduction and conclusion by Thomas Jefferson. However, closer examination reveals that our founding document is not merely a proclamation of rights or war, but a very long list of sharply worded complaints against King George III. Closer examination often stirs surprise among unfamiliar readers. Here are some highlighted reasons explaining why the colonists were willing to risk “our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor” in opposition to their detached leader:

“The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States. To prove this, let Facts be submitted to a candid world.
“He has endeavoured to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners; refusing to pass others to encourage their migrations hither. . . .
“He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone. . . .
“He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.
“For Quartering large bodies of armed troops among us.
“For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world.
“For depriving us in many cases, of the benefits of Trial by Jury.
“For transporting us beyond Seas to be tried for pretended offences.
“He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us. . . .”
Historian Ken Masterson Brown has said it best: “Arrogance and a determination to impose laws upon the colonies, not because they were beneficial to the colonists but only because the lawmakers believed they had the power to enact them, created the crisis.” As a result, the world was indeed turned upside down

The Elks wish to share a prayer for peace throughout the world and become united by renewing a pledge to aid widows, widowers, and orphans of our fallen heroes. And let us not forget the thousands of disabled veterans who continue to suffer the price of freedom even today.
The Elks pledge "So long as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget them." The Elks National Veterans Service Commission takes that pledge one step further, and promises service to our nation's veterans and military members, with a special focus on service to those in need.
