Jane Goldman and I went to several partner shelters in CA within 100 miles or so. We conducted and filmed interviews w/ shelter workers and volunteers, and we saw the homeless senior dogs waiting for rescue or euthanasia. I felt a deeper appreciation for Muttville Senior Dog Rescue, and the value of the rescue work we were doing.

This fact must be emphasized - and is also true for other sources of funds and donations.

Worth saying: your grant writing consultant specializes in grant writing, just like your online fundraising consultant specializes in online fundraising. We are great at what we specialize in. This does not mean we can do it all!

Right now, many nonprofits are motivated to explore grants. And why wouldn’t they be? Grants represent potentially vital funding your organization does not need to pay back. The money is already out there, so I am constantly encouraging nonprofits to go after grants.

However, it’s important to know that grants are just one of many important income streams for any nonprofit. It is very rare that grants can cover all or even most of a nonprofit’s budget, and this is especially true with nonprofits working in animal welfare. In addition, grants are usually one of the last income streams that become available to a nonprofit due to the financial and systematic requirements of most grants.

Covering 20% of your programming through grants is a fantastic place to start if you're just getting started with grants. Then, you can increase your goal from there as you build your nonprofit’s grant history and its capacity to implement and report on grants.

It's my absolute joy to write, design and create to raise funds for animal nonprofits, especially at this time of year. I have so much respect for the clients I am privileged to work with who trust me to do this important work for them.

I also receive the same kinds of communication from organizations I support, and I learn something valuable in every content I receive.

Something I find to be true in doing this service for others: one needs to feel a genuine sense of gratitude. I wake up each morning and thank the universe for my life, my abilities, my clients, my circle of humans and animals who share happiness with me. Then it naturally flows when I perform my work, which involves alot of thanking as well as asking!

My favorite quote is from Isabelle Allende: "You only have what you give." I believe this with all my heart and soul, and I witness this regularly.

I am fortunate to have met my heroes Jane Goodall, Milo Runkle, and Gene Baur. It's not a coincidence that they all radiate an amazing energy of positivity and generosity. This is how I want people to feel when they meet me, as I felt when I was in the presence of these amazing humans.
