Earlier today, contracted wildfire-mitigation crews working for the City of San Rafael were conducting vegetation-reduction activities on City owned land on San Rafael Lincoln Hill when a fire ignited within the treatment area. Preliminary information indicates the fire was accidentally sparked by the crew’s equipment.
The crew immediately called 9-1-1 and attempted initial suppression using the fire-fighting tools required under their vegetation-management contract. San Rafael Fire Department units quickly arrived and contained the fire to less than half an acre within 30 minutes. Existing fire roads and prior fuel-reduction work significantly aided containment efforts and reduced the risk of expansion. No structures were threatened, no evacuations were required, and no injuries were reported. Alert Marin, Nixle, and social media was utilized to inform the community and reduce additional calls to 9-1-1.

If your home or neighborhood will soon undergo a Wildfire Risk Home Evaluation, the evaluation checklist can help you spot simple fixes before inspectors arrive.
You can look for the same things they’ll be checking: dry grasses and weeds, dry vegetation, ladder fuels, and combustible materials such as outdoor furniture, doormats, garbage bins, lumber, and organic mulch within 5 feet of the building.
A quick walk around your property now can help you know what’s necessary so you can get a jump on it.
Check the list. Take action early. Then review your Wildfire Risk Report and work through your prioritized tasks. Mark completed tasks as “resolved” in your report.
Feel good about what you accomplished!

National Preparedness Month may be ending, but preparedness doesn't stop here. Make it a habit to check your go bag, update emergency contacts, and review your plan every few months. Test your smoke alarms. Refresh expired supplies. Talk with your family about what's changed. Being ready isn't a one time task, it's a lifestyle. Keep building on what you started this month, all year long.

Emergencies don't wait for you to get home from work. Having a neighbor you trust can make all the difference if disaster strikes while you're away. Exchange contact information and talk through a plan, like who can check on your home, grab your pets, or look in on a family member who might need extra help. Knowing someone nearby has your back gives you peace of mind, wherever you are when the moment happens.
