The U.S. government poured over $1 billion into the Salvadoran military to massacre its own people during the civil war. My mother survived that massacre. She grew up under curfews. She had to be inside by 6 PM, before the bullets rained. She flipped her mattress against the wall to block gunfire. My great-grandmother begged soldiers not to take her son so he wouldn’t be forced to kill. This isn’t “history” to us. This is our bloodline. The trauma still lives in her body and in mine. PTSD. Fear. Nightmares that never fade. No therapist ever came, only punishment. And yet, they dare to call her “illegal.” They brand us “invaders” for seeking survival, when it was the U.S. who invaded first. They crossed oceans to destabilize nations that weren’t theirs. They crushed revolts against oppression. They sent the CIA to our countries to kill movements for liberation. They armed death squads, then imposed bans so our people couldn’t seek refuge. They tell you this is the “land of opportunity.” But we know the truth: it is the land built on slavery, on stolen land, on blood. We didn’t cross the border. They crossed our peace. To those who cry “law and order”where was your law when the U.S. funded genocide? Where was your morality when children were dragged from homes, when villages were burned to ash? Don’t talk to us about “illegality” when your government’s hands drip with blood. This is not just trauma, it is truth they never wanted you to know. The truth that you don’t want to hear. Your country is complicit in our suffering. The real abuser, and you are still supporting them. The pain is intergenerational. And we will not be silenced. 🕊️ We are the children of survivors.
