Did This 1937 Mural Capture A Man With A Smartphone...In 1937 muralist Umberto Romano finished Mr. Pynchon and the Settling of Springfield for a Massachusetts post office, and in the crowd an Indigenous man holds a dark rectangle up to his face like a selfie. Looking at that slab it might seem like a phone seventy years early. But here is where things got strange. Well, you see. The painting shows 1630s settlers around William Pynchon, years before any smartphone existed, and the internet still calls that object an iPhone. But it doesn’t stop there. Historians say the strongest leftover is a European trade mirror, or maybe a blade, or a prayer book, and he is studying his own face. Officially it is not a proven phone. Still the pose looks wrong for 1630. So did that 1937 mural capture a man with a smartphone, or just a mirror that fools a scroll.
