Oregon Child Support Program - DOJ

Each year, from September 15 to October 15, Hispanic Heritage Month recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities in the United States. The Oregon Child Support Program takes this opportunity to recognize the Hispanic and Latino families and communities we serve across the state. Our work connects us with families from many different cultures, backgrounds, and experiences, and understanding the communities we serve helps us provide more respectful, responsive, and effective service.

Our work is centered on supporting parents so they can support their children. Providing clear, accessible information, offering language assistance when needed, and helping families understand and navigate child support services are just some of the ways we can better serve Oregon’s diverse communities.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Domestic Violence Awareness Month is a national campaign dedicated to raising awareness about domestic violence where organizations and individuals unite across the country to uplift the needs, voices, and experiences of survivors.

We recognize the critical role the Oregon Child Support Program plays in supporting survivors and their families, and providing safe, accessible pathways to financial independence for those affected by domestic violence. Today we wear Orange for Orange Shirt Day in solidarity with First Nations, American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians affected by residential Indian boarding schools. Orange Shirt Day is an annual event dedicated to honoring Indigenous children taken from their families and placed in residential schools. This day serves as a reminder of the impact of these policies on Indigenous communities and aims to promote reconciliation and understanding. At the Oregon Child Support Program, we believe every child – and every family – deserves to live with dignity and respect.

Effective October 5 the U.S. Department of State will begin revoking passports of parents who owe $15,000 or more in past-due child support. Parents who have their passport revoked should address any questions to the child support program that referred their debt. Parents who are out of the country at the time of revocation and need to return to the U.S. may apply at the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate for a limited emergency passport.

We like to think of child support programs as long-haul truckers. When a parent moves to another state, we don’t stop at state lines, we keep moving! Whether someone moves to California, Nebraska, or Maine, we collaborate with other states to ensure support stays on track and arrives where it needs to go.

If you live in a different state than the other parent, we work directly with child support programs across the country to establish and ensure compliance with these orders to help payments continue no matter where parents relocate.

We work with employers nationwide to ensure children get the support they need. Employers are a valuable partner for child support programs and account for about 75% of child and medical support collections through payroll deductions. From their contributions and working with our programs, we can continue to ensure financial stability for children and families.

Child support programs offer free or low-cost genetic testing when a child does not have two parents under the law. Not sure if there are two parents? Check to see if any of the following apply:

• Father, or second parent, is listed on the birth record
• Mother was married at the time of birth*
• Child was born within 300 days after the marriage ended*
*This is called a legal presumption.
