No youth programs this week! We're using the break to get ready for Summer Reading, which starts on Monday, June 22! There's still tons to read and play with at the library until then. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

Margaret and Julia have been working hard on our youth department pollinator garden this spring! Look out the windows in the play area and see what birds, bees or butterflies you can spot during your next visit. The garden improvements are funded by the Rye Driftwood Garden Club's generous grant that we received this year. ๐ŸŒท๐Ÿ๐ŸŒผ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿชป

We were thrilled to host this excellent event with Rye Historical Society - NH and Star Island last night... It was a full house, and attendees are saying it was a fascinating presentation.

Outstanding!

We expected attendance in the high 40s and were thrilled to welcome more than 60 people, with every seat filled in the Community Meeting Room at the Rye Public Library for the presentation, "Rye's Star Island Connection: The Oceanic Hotel's 150 Years at Sea."

Thank you to everyone who joined us on June 2 for an evening rich with local history, fascinating stories, and community connection. Guests enjoyed learning about the remarkable legacy of the Oceanic Hotel on Star Island and the enduring ties between Star Island and Rye.

A heartfelt thank you to Anne Beattie and Joe Watts for sharing their expertise and bringing this important chapter of Seacoast history to life.

What a wonderful reminder that our community has a deep appreciation for local historyโ€”and that a great program can truly fill the room! ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ‘

In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we have invited a guest speaker to specifically discuss the Japanese American experience during World War II.

On one hand, Japanese Americans were rounded up and shipped off to grim "internment camps" in remote and desolate locations.

On the other hand, when allowed to join the war effort, Japanese Americans went on to become some of the most decorated soldiers in US Army history.

Unfortunately, there are some today who would rather erase both of these historical facts. This brings us to the importance of archivists like UNH's Special Collections Librarian Kai Uchida, who will lead this discussion. Come and learn what he and others are doing to preserve primary-source materials.
