Honor Flight Chicago is a not-for-profit providing a day of honor, thanks & inspiration to WWII, Korean & Vietnam War vets with a trip to Washington, D.C.
Welcome Home for 39 WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War Veterans at our second Operation Eagles Landing Gratitude on the Ground!
Today is our second-annual Operation Eagles Landing: Gratitude on the Ground at Cantigny Park. This program gives participants whose health or circumstances preclude a trip to D.C. the Honor Flight Chicago experience close to home.
As he does every flight morning, Wayne Messmer opened the festivities patriotically and beautifully with our national anthem!

SCHEDULE UPDATE!
Due to the incoming remnants of Hurricane Polo, our 2026 Colin Myron Memorial Golf Outing is postponed one week and will now be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, October 8. The current long-range forecast for October 8 shows partly cloudy skies with a high near 70!
All timing and events will remain the same, including the post-round dinner with raffle and silent auction items.
If you were not available to play on the original October 1 date, we still have space for you to sign up and participate on October 8! Information in the first comment.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE!
Ed Bales was a top-secret crypto officer aboard the USS Beale, patrolling the Caribbean in the early 1960s. Not only did his ship serve as an es**rt for the merchant freighter Houston during the Bay of Pigs invasion, the Beale also participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis blockade. In one particular incident during that blockage, the Beale dropped a depth charge on a Russian submarine that brought the world as close to nuclear war as it has ever been. Over the weekend, several of our volunteers walked in a Hines VA Hospital parade to kick off their Adaptive Games Expo, then volunteered to help veterans with disabilities as they participated. They had demonstrations and competition all morning long, and it was our privilege to assist!
Jack Parr's son, Kevin, dropped him off at Chicago Midway International Airport Wednesday morning for . Kevin, a Southwest Airlines Captain, told his Dad he also had to be at the airport for "training." Surprise! Kevin was actually our outbound pilot flying. Watch the surprise unfold:

The flight consists of 105 Males, and 1 Female heroes.
On todays flight there are
2 Silver Star, 1 Legion of Merit, 2 Bronze Stars with “V” Valor, 8 Bronze Star Recipients, 5 Purple Heart, 2 Air Medal, 1 WWII Victory Medal Recipients.
Also, 7 Combat Infantry, 2 Expert Infantry, 1 Combat Medic, 2 K-9 Handler, 1 Green Beret Special Forces, 6 Marine Combat Action, 5 Airborne Wings, 1 Medical, and 1 Shell Back.
57 Army, 14 Marine Corps, 18 Navy, 2 Coast Guard, and 15 Air Force.
To date, since the first flight in June, 2008, has Flown a total of 12,655 heroes.

4,216 from Vietnam War.
Every year, Honor Flight Chicago flies hundreds of veteran heroes to Washington D.C. to see the memorials erected in their honor. They are treated with a full day of the honor and respect they deserve! Our heroes arrived at at 3:30am today. It’s been a very long day for many of them. But here to cheer them on and begin their much deserved and long awaited “Welcome Home” and they will be greeted by the cheers of 37 sailors at the gate, a pipe and drum band, the Frankfort Brass Band, and thousands of patiently waiting family and friends in baggage claim.
